Fax answers phone all the time

I have a hp pavilion 763n. I am using windows XP. It has a 2.53gh processor and a 512mb ddr sdram memory. I use a dial up modem.
Everytime someone calls me the fax picks up the phone. I have tried to diable it several times but to no avail. I have set the ringer to over ten rings but it seems to keep reseting itself. In order to recieve phone calls without the noise of the fax I need to unplug the computer from the phone line, every time. I think it has a life of its own. any suggestions (other then getting a cable modem)

 

i had exactly the same problem, and im buggered if i remember how it was solved! i know i disabled the fax sytem. it didnt work as a fax anyway. someone here will walk you through it. i probably posted it here so search under 'fax' aloha laurie.
