I need to fax a page to someone. Really ;-)
I used to have a utility called WinFax (I think I actually BOUGHT it, or got it bundled with something), but it's long gone.
WinFax would convert a text file to a fax, send it directly. I need to scan a document and fax it.

It's a legal document, so there has to be paper at his end.

Is there any S/W out there to send a scanned image as a fax?
I searched on 'fax', and amazingly got 0 (as in zero) hits.

I suppose I could go to the PO, or one of those local print shops, and the local 7-11 or Cumbie's prolly has a fax machine, but... I know I've done it before, like 10 yrs ago.

    Any help appreciated.

    PS:
I like the new UI. I haven't been here in awhile, and the user interface is subtly different, and seems to be more efficient, and faster.
You deserve a promotion, light colonel it is ;-)

I ran a Google for Cheyenne Bitware and got a bunch of hits. The second link on the first results page was a winner:
Freeware fax program link on this page
It's old, and designed originally for W95 and W98. I had it years ago, lost in between machines somewhere, re-d/ld it recently, and love it. I just use the fax part of the program. Faxes Word docs and text files and images just fine, and yes, they're paper at the other end if the receiver has a paper-eating fax. Receiving faxes is a breeze, too (if you know anybody out there who still has a fax machine to send you one from).

Use a Google search for Cheyenne Bitware or just jump to my link and use the download link on that page after you read about the prog.

Note: I use my Bitware Fax program on a Win98SE machine, and haven't loaded it on XP. It's a telephone program that works with a phoneline modem, though, so I think it should work just fine on any Windows flavour. If it turns out not to meet all of your fax-out fax-in needs, it has its own uninstaller that works perfectly, and all that's left is the Bitware folder (with your data in it) to delete.

Which OS do you have Morlok?

If XP their is Fax send/recieve software built in already.. just needs installing!

Control Panel > Add Remove > Windows Components > Fax Services ( dunno how good it is as I dont send faxes these days )

EDIT: just installed and tested the MS one and its VERY basic text one with no option to attach an image :(

SO remember you dont see anything in this post its a figment of your imagination ;)

    Another winner from/by MG.
    That fit the bill EXACTLY.
It took me a few minutes to install, as it froze when I didn't take the default bitware directory, and tried to install to a long directory name, but as soon as I figured it out, and gave it the 8.3 name of my target directory, it installed fine.
    That's one powerful program!
In addition to the fax (I sent the scanned document as a TIF file, which is a format I was unfamiliar with), I played with it a bit, and it can has a dialer, terminal emulation, plus answering machine features. I haven't played with it all yet, just perused the main screens, but it sure does have a lot in the package.
Why didn't I get it years ago?

Thanks for the pointer, it solved the problem, and more.
BTW, I found two more programs to D/L, by reading a few more of the posts here; an uninstaller, and the new AIDA32.
It all makes going to MG worth it. 2^10 thanks to TPTB for the site.

One of the great unsolved mysteries, morlok! Bitware's been out there since Win3.1, and because the telephony aspect of computing hasn't changed a lot in the last decade, it still works just fine.

Glad it did the trick for you! :D :D :D

i too am having fax probs. i have windows xp, and I'm on dsl. the fax wizard sez that if I'm using windows NT4 then Microsoft fax will be unavailable. I've never even heard of NT4. when i try to send a fax a box comes up that sez the phone is engaged or disconnected. should i just give up on MS and install one of these others.? do faxes even work on dsl? is it me? aloha laurie

sorry bazza. i meant fax by modem (http/tinurl.com2cgc3). ill try to fax someone closer (the one i 'need' to send is to the uk. i dont know if that makes it harder, but it certainly makes it harder to find out if they got it!). if that dont work ill try another fax programme. stay tuned. lol. aloha laurie

Laurie.... sadly DSL modems dont allow faxes.. you need the old fashioned DUN voice/fax modems to allow that, their are some fax online forwarding sites but they charge per fax or as subscription monthly/yearly.

Efax and Faxaway are two options MS give, but there will be more if you seach.... the MS page I was reading is this if your interested.... http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/learnmore/crawford_02october21.mspx

no. its easier to go down the 'fax shop' then to spend any more time buggering about. thanx for all the input tho. the bonus is that the more time i spend 'buggering about', the more aware of, and comfortable with my puter i get. much mahalo and aloha. laurie.:)

I've scanned documents, images and pictures and then used the fax that is built into Windows XP. I use that fax almost daily sending out resumes. I had a problem at first. I kept receiving "error" messages that the phone line wasn't available. It took me a while to realize that as long as the modem was connected to the phone, my line was busy. Once I got off the Internet and freed up the telephone line, my faxes go through very nicely. Same as receiving. I just have to ask people sending a fax to me to let me know so I'll let the "fax" pick up the phone rather than me.

So there's no point enabling or installing a fax program if I use DSL? I send a lot of stuff to DC...it's faster to roll there in my wheelchair than to go back to dial-up.

Please clarify for me ASAP, and thanks.

No as DSL uses a differnet method of sending data than what a 56k dialup Fax/Modem does even tho they share the same phoneline.

You can as far as I know as I never tested it as I now send everything via email, still use a 56k Fax/modem to send faxes via your phoneline... you just plug the phone cable from the modem into the splitter/DSL filter instead of your phone, then you can use fax...

Only other methods I know of are to use one of the online services ( cost $$$ tho ... see my post earlier for 2 companies that do this ) what they will do ist to convert your document/email and send it via normal phone line computer fax software.
