    Hi,

My sons computer has been infected with the FBI Ransom virus. It locked it up so bad that we couldnt hit F8 to get into safe mode at all, it just locked up the computer when you hit any key on the keyboard.

We ran Dr. Web Live Recovery CD and that at least got us so we could get Windows to come up, but still no F8 access.

Ran Kaspersky Computer unlock CD and then was able to run:

Rogue Killers, Malware Bytes, Hitman Pro, TDSSKiller, MGTools, logs are attached.

After running these programs, we still cannot use F8, and we get an error message when windows loads that file thngat.dll cannot be found.

    Thanks for the help!

When it is finished, there will be a log on your desktop called: RKreport[2].txt
Attach RKreport[2].txt to your next message. (How to attach)
Do not reboot your computer yet.

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines (some may not show now) but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    Thank you so much Kestrel13!

I deleted everything I could find on your list and attached the new logs below.

I then rebooted the computer and I still cannot hit any key on the keyboard or the computer locks up and just sits on the loading screen, it doesn't matter what key i hit. If I don't touch the keyboard, the computer will boot up to Windows like it should. I also tried a different keyboard and that made no difference. I can't try a ps2 keyboard because this computer doesn't have a ps2 port.

When Windows loads, I get a "c:\users\cam\AppData\Roaming\wpcof.dll" cannot be found error.

    I am running Windows 7 Professional 64bit

Sneaky little virus this is! :confused

    Thanks!

I ended up looking at the RKReport log and saw that I missed deleting these files:

    [SUSP PATH] HKLM\[...]\Run : shellstyle (C:\Users\cam\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\4683\shellstyle.exe) -> FOUND
    [BLACKLIST DLL] HKLM\[...]\Run : wpcof ("C:\Windows\System32\rundll32.exe" "C:\Users\cam\AppData\Roaming\wpcof.dll",Items) -> FOUND

Deleted both of those, new logs are attached.

I then rebooted and hitting any key on the keyboard still locks up the computer.
The "cannot find file error" is gone though. :)

    Thanks!

    Download and run OTM.

Download OTM by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.

    Code:
    :Files
    C:\Users\cam\AppData\Roaming\wpcof.dll
    C:\Users\cam\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\4683

    :reg
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\currentVersion\Run]
    "shellstyle"=-
    "wpcof"=-

    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes\{006ee092-9658-4fd6-bd8e-a21a348e59f5}]

    :Commands
    [emptytemp]
    [Reboot]
    • Return to OTM, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
    • Push the large http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2782/4174320048_f01c448b32_o.png button.
    • OTM may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.
    • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar), and paste it in your next reply.

NOTE: If you are unable to copy/paste from this window (as will be the case if the machine was rebooted), open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and attach the contents of that document back here in your next post.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista or Windows7) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

Let me know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now!

We will look at any broken services next.

Update on how my computer is running:

I rebooted the computer and tried to get into safe mode and hitting any key is still locking up the computer.

I then installed Avast, the free version, because there was no active anti-virus on the computer. The virus might have disabled it because my son was sure he had avast on here before the virus hit.

I tried to use Windows Defender and got this:

"the specified service does not exist as an installed service. Error code: 0x80070424"

I then tried to turn on Windows Firewall and got this:

"windows firewall can't change some of your settings. Error code: 0x80070424"

Thanks again for all your help!

I am wondering if this has anything to do with it: O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Badoo Desktop] C:\ProgramData\Badoo\Badoo Desktop\1.6.48.1082\Badoo.Desktop.exe

We will deal with that now.

I want you to run this and then go off and do something else whilst it runs as it takes a long time.

Download Windows Repair by Tweaking.com and unzip the contents into a newly created folder on your desktop.
    • Now run Repair_Windows.exe by double clicking on it ( if you are running Vista or Win 7, use right click and select Run As Administrator)
    • Now select the Start Repairs tab.
    • The click the Start button.
    • Create a System Restore point if prompted.
    • On the next screen, click the Unselect All button to first deselect all repairs.
    • Now select the following repair options:
      • Reset Registry Permissions
      • Reset File Permissions
      • Register System Files
      • Repair WMI
      • Repair Windows Firewall
      • Remove Policies Set By Infections
      • Repair Winsock & DNS Cache
      • Repair Proxy Settings
      • Repair Windows Updates
      • Set Windows Services To Default Startup
    • Now on the lower right side check the box to Restart/Shutdown System When Finished
    • Then make sure the Restart System radio button is enabled.
    • Shutdown any other programs that you are running now before continuing.
    • Now click the Start button.
    • Be patient while the tool repairs the selected items.
    • It should reboot automatically when finished.

After reboot, check to see if your firewall is working.

Ran the tweaking sofware and I have good news! Windows Firewall is now working!! :)

I deleted the badoo desktop files and rebooted but the computer still locks up when I try to get into safe mode, etc.

Windows Defender is still giving me the same error as before.

    Thanks!

Download Combofix to your desktop. Do NOT double click it to run it! Ensure you have your antivirus and antispyware disabled before we do the below.

Now we need to use ComboFix by sUBs

    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

If after running Combofix you discover none of your programs will open up, and you recieve the following error: "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion". Then the answer is to REBOOT the machine, and all will be corrected.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista or Windows7) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

Update on how the computer is running:

I rebooted and trying to get into safe mode or anything else still locks up the computer.

It now finds Windows Defender but when I try to update it, I get an error that it can't update because the registry has been marked for deletion.

    I'm ready for final steps!!

    Thanks so much!!

Hmmm! See the last ComboFix log again. All of the below are still present and need to be removed.
    WhiteSmoke Smartbar Search
    search.conduit.com
    BabylonToolbar
    funmoods

Also see runkeys.txt for related registry entries.

Thanks Kestrel! What would be the easiest way to remove them?

    A reboot should solve this.
