I'm just fed up with the Norton Antivirus. What are some good and free Antivirus there is? I have Zone Alarm, Spybot Search and Destroy, SpyBlaster and Adware.

Avast or AVG, both free and available from MG

    AVG http://www.majorgeeks.com/ download886.html

    Avast download http://www.majorgeeks.com/download1968.html

Take your choice. Lots of us like AVG, lots like Avast. I started with AVG but have switched to Avast mainly because of the way it does auto updates unobtrusively. Bazza

Alright have some question for the Avast program. What is VRDB and should I "Generate VRBD Now"? Also does is it always gonna do a scan count and is run time always gonna run? Thx

    VRDB

VRDB stands for "Virus Recovery Database"; it was known as "Integrity Database" in previous avast! versions. The aim of VRDB is to help when, despite all the security measures, a virus gets inside the computer and the files are infected. With the help of VRDB, it is possible to repair infected files (return them exactly to their original state). VRBD is announced by an icon with the letter "i" in the system tray (next to the clock). If the icon is animated, the database is being created right now.

    VRDB PRINCIPLE

avast! creates an integrity database, i.e. it stores information about the actual state of the files, doing it three versions back for each file. The database creation/maintenance is performed either when the computer is idle, or when the screen-saver is running (any screen-saver, not only the avast! one). This database, once it is created, is updated each three weeks (this value may be changed by editing avast4.ini).
If any file is infected by a virus, it is possible to repair it, i.e. turn it to its original state. If there are multiple versions of the file in the database, you can choose which version you want to restore.

    SETTINGS

The settings of VRBD can be changed by clicking on the icon in the system tray with the right mouse button. There are three options:

Generate VRDB when computer is idle. avast! will create its database only when the computer is idle, i.e. when it is not being used.
Generate VRDB only when screen-saver is running. avast! will create its database during the time screen-saver is running. It may be any screen-saver, not only the one included in avast!
Disable VRDB generation. avast! will neither create, nor update the database. If you select this option, it will not be possible to repair virus infected files in the future!

I help out on a security forum removing viruses and reading HJT logs and I hear TONS of people complaining about Norton.

I use AVG free edition and have been quite satisified with it. I sometimes go deep into Warez's Black Heart and see what AVG would catch just for fun. Warez throws a lot of Trojans at you and AVG has caught them all so far. The only one I'm aware of AVG won't catch is Java_Byteverify(or something like that.) But now it seems that that Trojan is now caught by Ad-aware.

But I'll periodically also run a free HouseCall scan just for backup. I haven't really run across anything that HouseCall won't catch.

However, I have heard that Avast is pretty good.

Running this now after AVG ran last night..... this rocks! And I had such faith in AVG too  It's already picked up 2 infections that AVG missed

While I've found AVG to be a good virus DETECTOR, I've also found it to be a poor cleaner of viruses. Detecting is only half of the battle.

If I was going to drop cash for an AV it would be for EZ-Armor from CAI, the makers of InoculateIT.

I used to use AVG too. I thought it was great... till I realised that it never detected ANYTHING and when it did it NEVER gave me the option to actually remove it.

avast! has been good so far, and crashes a lot less often than Panda did. Its got rid of some infections I had on file after extracting them from other peoples machines (so I could identify them..)

So then the weekly email from Road Runner advertising a free download of EZ-Armor is worth looking into? I'll check that out :D

yes, I have EZ running on 2 of the 4 pc's in my house. The other two boxes are Windows Server and the money maker says I have to buy a server version, but AVG works on them so I use that to do Real Time detect and since EZ can scan network drives.. so I use that to clean ;) I even run a scheduled scan for my network drives so I'm doubly protected.. All I know is that I'm covered :)

I'm coming from Panda as well. Nice to not have stop errors on shutdown!

    I'm enjoying Avast.

I use AVG have for quite some time & I've not had any real problems that couldn't be fixed. I've had too many bad experiences with anything Symantec. Only thing I used these days that has anything to do with Symantec is GoBack3, which I refuse to update just because I'd have to go thru Symantec to do so.

Avast is a very good proggy I just prefer AVG myself.

I'm thinking about trying AVG. Avast scanning set-up kinda weird. I dont even know if I'm doing it right.

Thanks Adrynalyne for the really detailed explanation of VRDB. I gotta use it more often, as a type of "system restore point" for my W98SE system.

Only downside is that it takes a long time which is why they specify to run it in idle time.

    Still prefer Avast to AVG.

Thanks A, anyhow.:) I updated my VRDB offline, yesterday. God it took a long while.:p I've only got a small amount (4-5 gig of stuff) on "C" drive. Does it also biuld up a database of "D" drive as well. "D" is mainly a backup of stuff on "C" on my machine. Can I set VRDB to only look as "C" in future. This will halve the time it takes. maybe I should "RTFM" :D bazza

I've been using the NOD32 trial, and I've been quite happy with it. Was thinking of paying for it, but now I might try out EZ-Armor, too. I've always been impressed with CAI.
