    Hi guys,

I run Fedora 5 on my backup P.C. and every few days numerous security updates pop up as being available. Some, (the ones I usually download) are core related but many others seem to be for Python development, Perl .... and some I have no clue about. Is there a rule of thumb as to which are really needed? I'd probably just get them all but it's on only a 6g HDD and space is low.

You have to keep in mind that FC is a developmental distro and as such there will frequent updates to installed rpms.

Thanks SPD. Would it hurt at all to not get any of the updates? The prompt window says security updates but many don't appear to be.

    Thanks

You only receive alerts when there are updates for installed RPMs on your system. Most vulnerabilities that exist in Linux are with the Scripting Languages, Ruby, Perl, Python, & PHP, etc.; and third-party party software. That's not to say there aren't vulnerabilities with the Linux Kernel, because there are.

You should update the installed packages anytime there are updates available.
