None of the programs on my pc work now due to a worm that required a custom cleaner from my antivirus company. They sent me a restore file but didn't tell me how to use it. FileAssociationRestore.reg I uploaded here in case someone wants to see it.

I just tried that but it asked what to open it with. The suggested program was Photoshop

.reg files should open with regedit.exe (should be in C:\Windows or C:\Windows\System32). You can also try opening regedit itself and going File --> Import.

Run these two commands from Start --> Run:
    ftype regfile=regedit.exe "%1"
    assoc .reg=regfile

If you need to repair .exe files, run these from Start --> Run:
    ftype exefile="%1" %*
    assoc .exe=exefile

Edit: Oops. Can't run those from Start --> Run. Try running command prompt (cmd) and then running those commands.

Well, if you can get to a command prompt (either cmd.exe or command.com) then you can use ftype and assoc to fix the associations. Those aren't programs. They're commands.

But if .reg, .com, and .exe are all broken, I think you're nearly out of luck.

Do you have another computer that's networked to the first? If so, you can connect to the registry remotely and repair at least .exe files.

da chicken I barely have this pc anymore. I truely dont understand what you are telling me to do or I would do it. Everytime I try to do ANYTHING I get open with or rundll32.exe not found. Could I call you or you call me? Yahoo messenger and MSN dont work either.

I think you're probably to the point that what needs to be done is a lot more techinical than what you're going to be able to do. What's broken is very deep in Windows; most techs aren't going to know how to fix it. That pretty much means you're going to have to hire someone to fix your computer, and they'll probably do a repair installation of Windows.

If you feel confident enough to do that, you can try a Repair Install yourself:

http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/rep... XP by Installing Over top of Existing Setup:

Note that you need to have your Windows CD to do this, and if you do the wrong installation method it will erase your entire hard drive.

As far as phoning me, I'd rather not. I'd have to charge you to do something like that, and paying someone local to you to do it would be a much better idea.

I have no money or I would gladly pay someone here or on Mars to fix it. I tried to do a repair using the repair console but got stopped when it asked which install I wanted to repair. There is only one so I typed 1 It was an invalid choice so I tried to type more but it wouldnt accept it.

I guess that what is next is to just close out all my accts everywhere and forget computers and internet. Thank you for your help da chicken.

How do I close my membership here? If I have no working pc it seems foolish to leave messageboard accts and email accts intact.

NOTE: If your EXE file associations are corrupted, it can be difficult to open REGEDIT, or to even import REG files. To work around this, press CTRL-ALT-DEL and open Task Manager. Once there, click File, then hold down the CTRL key and click New Task (Run). This will open a Command Prompt window. Enter REGEDIT.EXE and press Enter.
Thanks to Nigel Andrews for this tip.
