    OS: Vista Home Premium SP2

    File: CL_69200.CAT
    Opens with Crytpo Shell Extensions
    Size 157KB

    Location is in
    C:Users\my user name\{looks like a 36 digit encryption key}
    (parent folder name looks like a encryption key in brackets)

    I can access the file, not hidden, has lists of codes and says Security Catalog is Valid. I can look around, list of system files, most entries have to do with graphics drivers.

    Digital sig: OK, Microsoft
    Description is: MS Windows Hardware Compatibility PCA

    Properties created 9/2008 and not modified since; clean, no malware found.

    Looks very legit and most likely does what it says "checks compatibility" just strange file folder name and location. I read about .cat files and what they do.

    What has me curious is no hits for CL_69200.CAT and I can't be the only Vista user that has stumbled on that file and looked it up. So is the name specific to the machine?

    Only other thing I can think of is I might have installed a MS compatibility checker at one time before installing some hardware and forgot, and that's where MS stores the list.

    If you're a Vista user, can you look and see if you have that file? Thank you for your time.

    Hi Kitty

    Its likely that this crypto file is named uniquely for you as thats more secure in cryptology, and many also come with drivers as many are WHQL signed so the .cat that acompanies them is a crypto file, kinda like an MD5 tag.

    I have a stack of ntuser.dats in that location but no .cat files and .cats are Microsoft Security Catalog files.

    Dont think you have anything to worry about with these files, likely a driver or application thats a security one or one that saves data securely.

    Thanks for looking Halo, I've got no .dats but a .cat *smiles* yep I'm unique. Secure is a good thing even if I don't remember how I did it now, must have been when I was researching for something and installed to check files.
