    Hello,

    Quick question.

I'm trying to archive some media files and don't want to use up a crap-load of CDs. (I don't have a DVD burner.) I have about 8 Gigs that I want to save.

I thought compressing the files would help.

I downloaded 7-Zip to compress with but I'm not sure what to do. I tried compressing one 220Mb file with the default settings and the file it made was 218Mb. I was hoping for better than that. I'm thinking I should change the settings on what I'm doing or try a different type of compression file. (My first was the .7zip type set at "normal" compression.

My one concern is that with greater compression will be greater loss of data or data corruption.

Any thoughts, advice, or links that I should go to?

    thanks in advance,
    mike

Typcially, you won't be able to compress most media files more than they already are. You may see a 1 or 2 percent decrease in size.

Most media files already incorporate some type of file compression logarithm, using a program like 7-zip won't compress these files much smaller. You shouldn't have to worry about any data loss from the compression. However, every now and then a file does become corrupt during the compression process, not often but has happened. IT is always best to test the archive by uncompressing the file, and see if works before deleting the source files.

Well, I can't say that I'm not dissapointed, but, it's ok.
