1st off, I keep all my stuff up to date. Spybot S&D, Spyware blaster, Adwatch and Ad-Aware etc etc. I run this stuff multiple times a day. And I use AVG for mailscanning etc.

This morning I start up my pc and one of my apps says that something tried to alter a protected registry setting. So I have to hit block continuously. Until; all the windows close. Right after that, ALL my exes are rendered useless, and they are now.lnk files.

You would think all the spyware goodies I got for protection would stop this kinda thing. This is the second time this has happened. I can`t find a fix. I can`t get into the registry. The only thing I can do is surf the web apparently. Any ideas? Thx.

I need some kind of bat file I think, cause whatever I d/l to my pc, the exe is rendered useless. There has to be a file ext. reg fix somewhere. System Restore doesn`t work eiether.

Ok. I got all the exes in folders working, how can I reassociate the desktop exes and the start programs menus shortcuts? Thx.

Right click them and select Properties. Then fix the Targets.

That doesn`t work for what I had. But here is the fix I found. 1st, I had found a VBS script that allowed me to get my registry working again. Then I did Snoopys suggestion from this forum link:

I tellyas, I dunno wtf happened. I needed to update back to dx 9.0c, cause for some odd reason my dx reverted back to dx 8. Then I had to get all my windows updates again, reload a few drivers etc. Whatever it was, ya got me.

OK! But you said Desktop exes. That fix was a registry patch for all EXE files not being able to run to the file association for EXEs being removed.

Had you said that no EXE files would run, I would have given you that registry patch.

" ALL my exes are rendered useless, and they are now.lnk files."

This sort of means ALL EXEs to me. lol ALL means every EXE was rendered useless=no exes would run. Thx anyways. How pray tell does this kind of thing happen? What can do this?

Sorry I did not notice that in your first message. I saw the second message:

That is a rather open ended question as to what can do it. Any piece of malware could do this. All they have to do is edit your registry. I do not know of a specific one by name that does this, but I have seen probably 50 to 100 cases of this happening. In most cases the users had many malware problems.
