File sharing: "Access Denied" HELP!

My roommate just got a Dell and we want to get some file sharing goin on on our PCs. So I hook him up to my Linksys WRT54G router and create the workgroup, set the permissions on file sharing and on NTFS, and we shoud be ready to go, right?

Well I can get into his shared folders fine without a prob. But for some reason he can't get into mine with the error "Logon Failure: The user has not been granted the request logon type at this computer." So I fix that with this Server 2003 tools software by typing in some lines at the command prompt. I found the lines on google when I typed in the error in google and a page told me to try that. It worked to some extent.

After I did that, my roommates computer just got a generic "access denied" error and some garbage about him might not having permission my the admin. I've been troubleshooting this for a day now seaching on here and google.

    What else I've tried:
*Disable and enabling simple file sharing (tried both methods).
*creating identicle user account on my PC and setting permissions for it on both file sharing and NTFS tabs.
    *Disable and enabling guest accounts
*We both have admin accounts on our PCs with passwords.
*Disabled "Limit local account account use of blank passwords to console logon only" in Local Security Settings

We're both running Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 which is based off Pro and pretty much is the same as Pro as far as I've seen with features. It gives us the option to turn off simple file sharing.

I honestly dont expect much help from here givin my past expirience with posts here (one of my last ones had like 15 consecutive bumps and went for weeks on the main page with no responses :( ). But I'd appreciate any help anyone can provide and I give a thanks in advance.

Look at the Windows firewall setting or if you are running another firewall check the networking configuration.
    That might stop it.

    Merry Christmas:)

Yeah, forgot to mention that too. I already disabled both my Symanntec and windows firewall.

Now it's magicly decided that it wants to prompt me for a username and password to get into his PC. Any unsername and PW I us doesn't work either... his, mine, guest, admin..nothing. Weird stuff.

Nevermind, fixed it by enabling guest accounts. The user prompt, that is.. he still cant get into mine for some reason with the exact same settings as mine.

Thats not very nice at all...I mean, why post at that point? Sorry to sound bitter, but you can't expect for those of us that have spent our free time working our butts off to find that a friendly comment.

    1. How are you accessing the shares?
    2. Are you using ethernet, or wireless, have you tried both? SafeMode w/ Networking can be tried when using ethernet.
    3. What firewalls are on the machines in question, and have they been turned off for testing? Uninstalled?
    4. Can your roomate access his own machine via run line? \\computername, or \\IP? (computername to be replaced by network computer name, and IP to be replaced by IP address of his machine). If yes, have you tried accessing yours in the same manner from his machine?

Sorry, just talking from expirience. I can see you all have help a lot of people every way you could with their situations, but my past posts pretty much went completely unanswered and were completely valid questions that I couldn't find answers for here on the forum. It just frustrated me that I couldn't fix my problem with all the research I did and nobody would offer any help.

Well, I don't want to derail the thread here, but truth be told, I checked and you have only one past thread that went unanswered. Reasoning? Probably because nobody here knew the answer. Thats a pretty good track record, tbh. I can't remember how many threads I've had since 2002 that didn't come to a resolution.

Nobody knows it all. That goes without saying.

    1. We can both see each other in View Workgroup Computers. I can access his PCs shared folders fine when I click on the icon for his PC. He can see my PC in the same folder (View Workgroup Computers) too, but when he clicks on my PC, it gives an "Access Denied" error.
    2. Using Ethernet. We dont have wireless cards, so that's not an option. I only us my wireless with my PSP. Havn't tried safemode with networking.
    3. Both PCs running Symantec Client Firewall. Tried disabling and placing our IPs in the Trusted zone. I didn't try to uninstall them. Windows Firewall is of course turned off also. I don't think it's a firewall problem though because at first with them enabled, we couldn't even see each other. If we disable, or put our IPs in the trusted zone, then we can see each other fine and I can still access his PC without problems with the firewalls on.
    4. His PC can use the runline fine when accessing his own files on his PCs HD.
He can access my shared files too through the run line. Hmmm..?

Why does it let him in through the run line, but not just let him see all the shared folders by just clicking on my computer icon?

It wasn't that they just went unanswered, in the few others, they just stopped responding, and so did I with bumps. Esp. with the Media Player thread. As you've already pointed out, it doesn't really matter. I'm still appreciative of any help you all give me and in no way meant to be rude to anyone.

Its probably a Browse Master conflict. Disable the Computer Browser service on one of the computers, and reboot both machines. Then try it. If it doesn't work, give them a bit, in the upwards of an hour. If it still doesn't work, give SafeMode w/ Networking a shot on these machines. Both machines should be in that mode when trying it.
