File splitting program

Hi, I'm new here, so please forgive me if I haven't yet learned how to use the search options, but I've tried!

I'm looking for a (hopefully freeware) program that will split large .txt files into smaller pieces WITHOUT the option of rejoining them. I've got (old) large *log.txt files that I would like to split into monthly files, and then load them into Excel to manipulate the data.

I've Googled for such software, but all I can find is software that will split and re-join the files (by creating a .bat or .exe file). I don't want to merge the files later, I want to keep the files on a monthly basis.

I realize I could go to the good 'ol cut and paste method, but it would be entirely too time consuming. Some of the old .txt files are VERY large and Excel just won't handle them. Some of the files are larger than 1 million rows.

Any help/suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you for the suggestion. I'll give that a try. I think I can cut and paste to another workbook, to get each file into a monthly workbook, though I haven't done that before.
