My friend asked me to get on here and ask you guys for some help..so here goes...He has just got a new dell computer with XP on it, his old computer has Windows 95. The CD drive is busted in the old computer and the new computer does not have a floppy drive..Any suggestions on how to transfer his files from the old computer to the new one? Or where to find a cd drive compatible with win95?

Easiest course of action would be to take the hard drive out of the 95 machine, set the jumpers to slave and put it into the new puter ....(middle ide connection - ). When you boot back up, it should recognize the slave drive, you can explore and copy and paste files/folders.

Hope the DELL hasn't got a SATA hard drive.

Check out http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=105861 for possible problems, if it has. Bazza

    Thanks for the responses!!

Not sure about the SATA hard drive...I believe he has the Deminsion E521 but I'll have to check on all that. If it is not a SATA hard drive could you explain how i would go about changing/switching the hard drive? (putting old one into new one?) the old computer is a gateway (by the way:).

My computer is a dell XPS 400...i just used that everest program and the only thing i found was an Intel(R) 82801GR/GH SATA Raid controller...is that the hard drive? and if so what will i need to do if my neighbors computer has the SATA?

  6. TimW

TimW MajorGeeks Administrator - Jedi Malware Expert Staff Member

That is the raid controller ....not the hard drive ...if both are desktops ...open the case of the 95 machine ...you'll see the hard drive ...remove the ide connection and the power connection ...look for the jumper on the back and there should be a diagram on the drive showing where to put it for a slave configuration ...on the new machine ..open case and put the 95 drive on the middle connection on the ide ribbon and attach a power cord to it ....boot up and it should recognize the slave drive ...if it doesn't post back.

It is an ata serial drive ...so don't worry about the sata stuff.

Ok....i finally got my hands on both machines...i got the hard drive out of the old Gateway. I see how to make it the slave drive (diagram) and see where to plug it in to the new dell machine...problem is the plugs are different!! Any suggestions?

Ok...scratch that...i went into the attic and got my old PC down...it is running winME...i removed the cover and it has the same 4-pin connectors as the win95 machine...can i use the win95 harddrive as the slave in the win ME machine?? if so, how would i go about doing it? same as above?

    In a word ....yes.

OK...i found the "slave pin" on the 40something ribbon pin thingy:) ..and hooked it up to the win95 hard drive.....booted the computer up...now, how do i find the "slave" info?

  13. kjb125

    kjb125 Private First Class

OH....power cord?? would that be something like a 4-pin connection with colored wires on it??

  14. kjb125

    kjb125 Private First Class

OK...duh....my bad, "power cord!!!!!" :) OK i think i got everything hooked up now.....im just waiting for the computer to boot up...sorry for the last post:)

So far....started puter and all i got is a screen that says Windows 95 and has a picture the "microsoft window".....should i shut down or wait it out??

  16. kjb125

    kjb125 Private First Class

now i got blank screen with cursor in top left corner?

  17. TimW

TimW MajorGeeks Administrator - Jedi Malware Expert Staff Member

"started puter and only got the windows 95 screen " ....thought you were going to slave to the me machine .....as in leave the me hard drive on the last IDE connection jumpered as master(with a power hookup) and put the 95 hard drive on the middle connection jumpered to slave (with a power hookup) .....

  18. kjb125

    kjb125 Private First Class

Tim....yes thats what i did...kept the ME where it was and put the win95 on the middle one (it was marked slave)....i started the computer and the windows 95 screen came up....after that it said something about searching for drivers? any idea?? i clicked ok and it said it had to restart...now i got win95 screen again.

  19. TimW

TimW MajorGeeks Administrator - Jedi Malware Expert Staff Member

Did it ever boot into ME ....before you put the other drive in?

  20. kjb125

    kjb125 Private First Class

no....it just boots to Win95....then the update device driver wizard window comes up....after the Win95 screen....have not seen ME yet!

  21. kjb125

    kjb125 Private First Class

AHHH....yes tim....ME would work before the Win95 drive went in...i misunderstood your question :) i did start the computer to make sure it worked before i put the win95 drive in.

  22. TimW

TimW MajorGeeks Administrator - Jedi Malware Expert Staff Member

Boot into the bios and see if both drives are recognized then go to boot order ...and change it to the me hard drive as first boot device.

  23. kjb125

    kjb125 Private First Class

Ahhhh tim.....you lost me:) can you explain how to do that?

  24. TimW

TimW MajorGeeks Administrator - Jedi Malware Expert Staff Member

Before we get you into unfamiliar territory ....let's recap ....first I am at a loss (other than some bios changes) as to why it's booting into 95 instead of ME if all is setup correctly.

And the purpose of this is to ? get what files off the 95 to put on xp?

  25. kjb125

    kjb125 Private First Class

Yes....i need to get the files from the Win95 hard drive to the new Xp one...but the "connectors" are different, so i got my old machine out, that has ME on it (the connectors are the same)...so i can put the files on that and then transfer them to Xp...make sense?? CD drive does not work in the Win95 machine....and the Xp machine does not have a 3.5" floppy. So this is the "round about" way.

  26. kjb125

    kjb125 Private First Class

The files on the Win95 are: Files off of a personal "business" computer...the guy has his own company, and says he needs the files/saved "stuff" off of the Win95 hard drive. I'm assuming client/job info and stuff like that.

  27. TimW

TimW MajorGeeks Administrator - Jedi Malware Expert Staff Member

Let's step back ...on the new xp are you saying that there is NO IDE cable? Your hard drive is a four wire sata drive? You have a cd/dvd drive that is on a IDE cable? If so ...I would set the 95 hard drive to master, disconnect the dvd/cd drive from the power and IDE cable and attach them to the 95 drive (it can hang..lean ...sit sideways, whatever ..until you've pulled what you want off of it). Then reboot (and do the above with the main power cord unplugged rom the surge protector ...no electrical connection live).

  28. kjb125

    kjb125 Private First Class

OK....so your saying try this in the XP machine?? Sorry for being so dumb:)

  29. TimW

TimW MajorGeeks Administrator - Jedi Malware Expert Staff Member

Yes .....and no, you're not dumb ...it's difficult on both sides of these kind of exchanges to "see" what the other is doing ...thinking ...try the below on the xp machine ....:) :) set the 95 to master and put it in place of the cd/dvd drive ...reboot and it damn well better see it in my computer ...

  30. kjb125

    kjb125 Private First Class

OK...it looks like the only IDE cable (ribbon) is hooked to the media card reader...will this work?? Both the CD/DVD drives just have the power cable and p8 and p9 cables connected to them (like a 5-wire connection).

  31. TimW

TimW MajorGeeks Administrator - Jedi Malware Expert Staff Member

Tell us what the computer is .....model and manufacturer ..

  32. kjb125

    kjb125 Private First Class

Actually....as i took a closer look....it looks like the IDE goes to the usb "hookups" on the front of the machine.

  33. kjb125

    kjb125 Private First Class

    Dell...Deminsion E520....XP os.

  34. TimW

TimW MajorGeeks Administrator - Jedi Malware Expert Staff Member

Ok ....sata drives and one ribbon going to the media card reader ...it has a secondary connection (set the 95 hard drive to slave) try sticking it on there and boot it up ...see if it sees it ...if not ...we'll have do do something different. (leave the media reader attached ....just middle connect and power to the drive).

  35. kjb125

    kjb125 Private First Class

OK...Actually as i take a closer look the ribbon runs to some kind of board that is connected to the usb ports on the front of the machine...And i am not quite sure of what you mean by "middle connect"....the ribbon only has one "connection point" (the one on the usb ports).

  36. TimW

TimW MajorGeeks Administrator - Jedi Malware Expert Staff Member

Then it's not the board that dell has for that model .....back to square one ....arrggghh.

back it goes to the ME machine ....except this time instead of master/slave ...set them both to cable select ....see what happens.

(Better yet would be to find another xp machine to slave it to ...but ...)

OK....now that you said that....MY computer..the one i keep typing on is a Dell XPS 400....is that any help?

OK....now that you said that....MY computer..the one i keep typing on is a Dell XPS 400....is that any help?

And it has a ribbon ide run to the cd drive and the 3.5" floppy

  39. TimW

TimW MajorGeeks Administrator - Jedi Malware Expert Staff Member

Well, yes .....you got two drives in that one (your dell xp that your typing on..)?

You should have a seperate ribbon going to the 3.5 floppy ...NOT that one!!

Another going to the cd/dvd drives ...you could use that one if you want , but would be better to leave the master hard drive in and slave on that ribbon ...

  40. kjb125

    kjb125 Private First Class

there is only one cd/dvd drive in my XPS....but there is a place for #2....and i just found the ide connection for that....can i use this to hook the hard drive too?

  41. TimW

TimW MajorGeeks Administrator - Jedi Malware Expert Staff Member

Would prefer to have it hooked as a slave to the master hard drive ....but you could connect to the ide that has the cd/dvd drive as a slave ....

  42. kjb125

    kjb125 Private First Class

OK....Sorry Tim...my internet went out last night....my computer (dell XPS) already has 2 hard drives in it...both with no ide ribbon (guess their sata drives)....i put the Win95 hard drive on the cd/dvd ide ribbon and booted my computer back up...when i did this i got that Win95 screen again...now am i doing something wrong--as in do i not have the Win95 hard drive set to slave?? the drive is a Maxtor, Model # 91020D6 maybe you can explain how to set it to slave.

  43. kjb125

    kjb125 Private First Class

OK..OK..TimW forget the last post...i got the Win95 hard drive to slave..i over looker a jumper. I got it on the WinME machine now as the slave drive, I went to my computer and found the drive...i opened it, it only has two files in it...RESTORE and RECYCLE...did i do something to lose the data?? Or do i still need to do something else? do i need to get a back-up disk (i believe the Win95 was back-up a few days ago)? Help:)

  44. TimW

TimW MajorGeeks Administrator - Jedi Malware Expert Staff Member

Try the restore ....otherwise you may need to try to recover the files with PCInspector file recovery ....let us know.

  45. kjb125

    kjb125 Private First Class

OK...here goes...i clicked the restore folder...SRDISKID.DAT came up...i clicked that and got this message--you are attempting to open a file of type 'DAT File' (.DAT) These files are used by the operating system and by various progarms. Editing or modifying them could damage your system. if you still want to open the file click open, otherwise click cancel...?

  46. TimW

TimW MajorGeeks Administrator - Jedi Malware Expert Staff Member

No....thats a restore data point ....I assume you don't have a ERD (emergency recovery disk)?

At this point, I'd be inclined to tell your friend that his 95 is toast ....but if you want to try, download the PCInspector file recovery on the must have software section on the front page and download it to the xp c drive and have it try to recover the files in the 95 drive ...

  47. kjb125

    kjb125 Private First Class

OK....I think my friend back his computer up (win95) quite a bit...i dont know about a ERD....but im sure he has a back-up disk...any help?

  48. TimW

TimW MajorGeeks Administrator - Jedi Malware Expert Staff Member

Backup disc would be good ...in fact most of what he wants should be findable on the disc ...

  49. kjb125

    kjb125 Private First Class

OK..OK...so...if i can get the back up disk...i can run that on my computer and the transfer files to his computer?? or is it more complicated than that?

  50. TimW

TimW MajorGeeks Administrator - Jedi Malware Expert Staff Member

Get the backup disc and you should be able to explore the disc to find the data
