Files loaded on desktop after Windows 8.1 update

Updated a laptop from 8.0 > 8.1 since laptop kept giving a message to upgrade for free ( and well 8.1 seems more stable).

After update was done there is 3 shell script files on the desktop called
Desktop.ini, thumbs.db and another desktop one.

I was going to delete them but the computer kept prompting me that doing so will probably corrupt my operating system.

Any idea as to why these appeared on my desktop after updating to windows 8.1?

 

It's caused because the default option to hide protected operating system files has been unchecked. To hide them again open File Explorer > View > Options > View and find and recheck that option.

 

Can you elaborate more on how to access this please?

This isn't done through the control panel?

 

Nothing to do with Control Panel. Follow the step-by-step I've already given you. If you don't know what File Explorer is it's what used to be called Windows Explorer. There will be an icon for it on your taskbar.

 

yes i am familiar with the file explorer except that its a bit harder to '' find'' on windows 8.

In windows 7 i could simply click on the windows icon and in the search bar i would type in ''options'' from there i would see '' folder options'' and from there on view i have the option to hide hidden files.


However on windows 8 i can't do this because i have no windows icon and when i go to apps and file explorer and manually type in ''options'' or ''folder options'' nothing comes up regarding that

 

Nevermind i found folder options in windows 8 when i found it , the solution was pretty much like you stated so thanks earthling those shell scripts are not visible anymore ( the option to show hidden files was checked).
