Does anyone know if using the files settings and transfer wizard on XP is a good way to free up disk space? I was hoping to transfer the files to an external hard drive, but I don't see how to do it.

    Hi,

My name is Deepa and I work for the Social Media and Community Team at Dell. The answer to your question is yes, files settings and transfer wizard on XP is a good way to free up disk space. When you then run the easy transfer wizard to restore those files it insists on restoring all the files on C: as well, not checking the old files still resident on C: to see if they are the same. If it's a single drive with logical partitions, if you back up the logical partition where XP resides, it's going to back up the other logical partitions as well. Then when restoring with the Early Transfer Wizard, it's going to restore all the partitions as well. You can also try to run a disk clean up. You can also try to use the cut-paste the data from your system and put it into external hard drive.

    For further help please reply.

    Thanks and Regards

    Hi Deepa,

Thanks so much for responding, but I am not tech savvy and didn't understand what you were saying about the wizard. I ran the wizard, but it seems to have gathered the files; however it didn't transfer them. When I opened it again it just takes me back thru the same steps. I am wanting to get the files from C to F.

    Thanx!

    Hi,

As you say, you want to transfer the files from C to F, you need to copy the files from C drive and then paste it into the F drive (which might be your external hard drive). If you do not want to keep the duplicate files in both the drives then after transferring you can delete it from C drive.

    For further help please reply.

    Thanks and Regards

The settings and transfer wizard is used to transfer from one computer to a 2nd different physical computer.

It is NOT used when you simply want to move files from one partition or disk on the same computer.
