Well now, we can take that little item off the "to-do" list. :)

It couldn't have gone any better, one of the smoothest launches I can remember. I've always thought an omen could be a good thing if worked right. Confirmed in a perfect 143 x 97 orbit, and the population of the galaxy is currently 7+2 on this side of the black hole.

A tired bunch of pups right now, have strict orders from the boss (Abby ;)) to go home and get some sleep. Won't bother to go to the beach tonight to see fireworks, nothing can top the little cracker we sent up today. :)

Awesome ....esp. considering all the negativity surrouding the launch.
Way to go space cowboys!!:) :)

What negativity? I work with a bunch of positive, upbeat people that care little about things like that. The only negativity I've ever encountered is by people who have no understanding of what we are doing, or a press corp that pretends that they do.

On a semi-related note, looks like we weren't the only ones launching things today:

Oh well, if you believe the press, the rhetoric and Art Bell, this is the beginning of the end of the world, so get your ducks in a row.

Star ....no insult meant ....(get some sleep) ....there has been virtually nothing but questions about the foam on the national news for the last three days ...citing some of the "insiders" at NASA, who felt the "Boss" was taking a serious gamble ....
I'm totally supportive of the program and wish it would not only be better funded, but also be given more latitude to attempt even greater acheivements.
Any thinking person knows that this isn't a Sunday ride in the park ....there are so many things that could go wrong ....it's a major miracle that NASA has had the success that it has. It's a hell of a long way from getting on a little boat and hoping the winds blow you to a new and safe harbor.
My sincerest congradulations to you and all those that make this adventure successful!!

Brilliant news, watched the launch earlier and it looked smooth and well (not that I know anything about NASA!)

It comes with the territory; ours is a risky business.

No insult taken; NASA has been such a popular whipping boy for so many for so long, I would think people would like a new challenge and pick on the EPA or Post Office :)

    Get some SLEEP!

Oh and the launch did look damm good...... "negativity" = backwards in my book...... going "vertical" = forward :)

Damm fine job all round and I know the amount of effort you guys and girls would have put into making this a sucess and a day to remember, just sticks two fingers up at the doubters and critics.

It was the BEST DAMNED fireworks I ever seen!!!!

Congrats on another job well done!! It amazes me what can be done with the right minds and enough money!!!!

Like "The Boss" said....GET SOME SLEEP, or the next thing you know, you'll be all delusional and stuff, and be out in the garage trying to strap rocket launchers to your camero!!!!

Lets all pick on the EPA, since it's their fault that you're not still using the superior foam that doesn't come apart so easily. It's not like you guys are going to go into mass production and sell main tanks all over the country.

Good deal on the launching of STS-121! Good to see things went smoothly (and vertically).:)

Now for you to get that well earned sleep and relax time. Although the stess time is not over yet, at least it's off to a good start, and on the 4th of July, too - woo! ;)

Help get Atlantis ready, either for a rescue if needed or its own mission next month.

I say we just start blasting at every one that isn't NASA. That way we get all the wastes of flesh in our government.

While we were waiting for our July 4th firework display to commence, some onlookers drew our attention to another sight in the sky they believed to be the Space Station or Discovery. There was something in the paper a few days ago that this would be possible over the next 2 weeks in Oregon. Kinda like a very large fast moving constant star several thousand miles to the left of the moon.

What's the chances of that being a sighting Star?

Congrats on getting it up (so to speak lol)

LMAO...Lev, you've managed to cause me to choke AGAIN!!!!

I'll have to say though...as tired as I'm sure he was...I don't think the other would've even been an option!!!

    Ok....I'll leve it at that!!!!

I've always been a believer in the space program. I've never understood folk who think it's a waste of money. It's programs like that that keep the USA from becoming a 2nd rate power, more so than the military (though I'm for it too). I just hope Congress doesn't find a way to kill the next generation spacecraft.

I HAVE got to see one of those birds lift off before they're retired! Couldn't see the Saturn V because I was too young to have a say, but no excuse for not seeing a shuttle lift off.

    no

was just arguing with some anti-space race people. Was not coming up with a good example of every day things they owe to the space development.

But they do sit around and watch nothing but sattelite tv all day. :)

Congrats on the flawless launch NASA, exploration always was and will be a risky business, no matter what it is. Either exploring the vast unknowns of the oceans or space. Minimizing the risks as much as possible is all that anyone can hope for. I mean if cars were treated the same as shuttles, well you get my drift.

I agree with the media comment above, most of them don't have a clue of what they're talking about and unfortunately many people's opinions are swayed by this drivel and ipso facto the politicians.

However, I do have to give kudos to Canada's CBC science correspondent Bob McDonald and to Miles O'Brian of CNN who give knowledgable and unbiased reporting and I'm sure there are others also.

On a last note about Art Bell, LOL haven't heard that name in 15 years, I put him in the same category as good ole' Mr. Vicodone and Viagra Rush Limbaugh.
    Go NASA go!

Actually probably not. Cable isn't offered in the area. Stuck with sat tv.

Do they have anything to simply help you to get UP in the morning? Coffee works well once you're vertical, but just getting there can be a chore. ;)

NASA Administrator Mike Griffin to reporters after the landing: "It's such a great day I don't think even a press conference can spoil it." :D

A perfect ending to a perfect test flight; this ship is in such terrific shape, I can't tell you how proud I am of our team. We'll do it again late next month, as Atlantis gets her turn in the first full-fledged construction flight since the mission before Columbia.

When it flies like this, awesome is such an inadequate word. :)
