If you prefer XP to Win7 then you'll absolutely hate Win8.

Seriously, just stick at it for Win 7, as once you're used to where M.S. hides everything, it really is an easy and powerful O.S.
Yeah, not a huge fan of Win 8 myself, yet. I'll give that time as well.;)

Just gotta be smart about it.

Here is how I deal with the Windows 8 UI:

FWIW, I hated XP. A fine OS, but dang...could they make it any uglier?

Windows 7 is just a pretti-fied updated XP.

If you can show me Office 2013, Visio 2103, Project 2013, Visual Basic, or C# IDEs (that are as robust as Visual Studio) on OS X, I'll remove it.

    No?

    Ok then ;)

I was one of the 7 haters in the beginning. I like things to look, act and be a certain way. I then found Classic Shell and started to the give the OS more of a chance. I now wouldn't go back to XP or Vista. I feel the same about 8 but have only played with it for less than a hour.

Yeah, I'm also planning to stick with Win 7. Tried Win 8 in a VM; man is that thing a train wreck! I bought my Win 7 box last summer prior to Win 8 coming out. :)

I didn't like 7 much at first, but kept plugging at it and like it now. As has been said, it's pretty much a matter of getting to know how to navigate the menus and finding out where things are.

I have no plans to upgrade to 8 anytime soon . . . If I build a new PC it will have 8 on it.

It only took me a couple of weeks to get used to 7, at least on my own computer. It might help that one of the computers I use at work is 7-based with a proprietary system on top of it, though. But I like it.

Windows 8, on the other hand...I've tried here and there on different machines, and it seems about as annoying and useless as Vista. I may change my mind when I'm forced to buy another laptop and that is my OS choice, but I'm hoping to hold out for the next one. I tend to only like every other incarnation of Windows as a rule.

The only thing I don't like about Windows 7 is how completely hopelessly useless the search is. How much do I dislike it? I miss the little animated search character. And the ability to actually find a file.

I liked XP in it's time. I liked Vista after SP1 (and after turning off UAC, which must stand for U Absolutely Crazy if you like it). I like Win7. I hate Win8, which is why I put it on my kids computer. It's perfect for anyone that needs a dumbed down version of Windows.

But if anything Windows 7 is a better version of Vista, not XP. Most any hardware driver that worked in Vista also worked in Win7, not so with XP. Many of the features that were new in Vista, Readyboost and Aero and better support for 64 bit OS's, are also in Win7 and are expanded upon. There's a few things that were in XP that are missing in Win7, but those were also missing in Vista.

Anyways, it's just my opinion that Win7 is just Vista2, and I'm fine with that.

You just hit upon why Windows Vista was fail. Windows Vista introduced a new driver model and very few manufacturers jumped on it to update their drivers, even though they were given something like a 1 year warning. By the time Windows 7 rolled around, they had finally got off their bums and written for the new driver model. Microsoft took the time to fix some glaring annoyances like UAC and adjusted Aero some. Vista drivers worked in Windows 7 due to the same driver model, so manufacturers didn't have to go back to their playbook and figure things out apart from taking advantage of new DirectX, etc.

Microsoft's stance on service packs is that they do not add features or visual changes, and so a new OS version was born. It is how you said though, an extension of Windows Vista.

I'm still scratching my head over the number of proprietary business software packages (auto repair, medical billing, etc.) that have not released upgraded versions to work on Win 7/Win 8.

Unless a client has an older volume license or an OEM restore CD, reloading a genuine copy of XP on a PC (such as in the event of a crashed hard drive) is becoming almost impossible.

Like it or not, Microsoft has dictated that XP is going away for good. It's time IT departments and software developers quit treating this fact like the three-ton elephant in the room everyone is ignoring.

They are patent trolls and if you look at the patents, they aren't remotely close to what Metro is. AOL could say the same thing from back in the 90s.

Seriously, look at the patents. That is the only thing the company has to their name. No substance, no product. Just patents so they can attempt to sue people and make a buck.

Look at how they described their tech in 2003:
    http://web.archive.org/web/20040413001742/http://surfcast.com/

    Now look at it now:

    http://www.surfcast.com/

magically, their tech is called...tiles LOL. These guys are reaching, Their patent and intent was for browsers, not OSes. MS has their own tile patent as well.

I've been using Win 7 for a while now, I was dead against all other OS's than XP, it took a little getting used to but I can honestly say I ended up liking it a lot, yes it has soe things I wish were ore like XP but on the whole I enjoy many of it's features.

I've been on Win 7 a little over a year now and although I've gotten sorta used to it, still miss XP.

Win 7 x64 uses so much more space on the HDD than XP x32 did. Yes, I do get angry at Win 7 just for that and still have problems sometimes in finding stuff on it.

roflmao That's it exactly!! Every time there's a change to software of any kind (I shudder to think what would happen if the colours here changed, for instance) we act as if our world is coming to a crashing halt.

I was stuck on Win2000 for the longest time, and refused to change until I absolutely had to. Windows 7 was a lot easier for my to transition to than XP was, though.

I'm kind of the same way.
I grew up with Win 95/98 and learned most things on XP a few years ago when I got my own computer and was able (allowed) to mess and play with all the settings, Switched to Win 7 as soon as I could. By, borrowing a copy off a friend who bought it and decided not to use it. And I have a copy of Windows 8 coming in a few weeks that I got from a Microsoft convention a few months back so my new machine, when I build it hopefully next year, will be running 8.

Actually I don't mind change that much as long as it's productive or a good change. What bugs me is when something used to take 2 clicks in the old version now takes 4 clicks. It's not they changed it, or changed where the put it (I can adapt), or the color (although some colors are harder on the eyes than others), it's the more I have to do to do the same thing. What's worse than that is something that used to take 3 clicks now takes 5 clicks but instead of following a menu tree down the line you now have to chase yourself all over the screen. I hate that that most. I understand that you want to make it easier for cell phone users to pretend they can actually do things on them, but come on. Support the desktop crowd just a little.

Not really relevant to what I was talking about, but there is no reason you cannot have all of the above. However, Microsoft saves features for new Windows versions for release, not service packs.

Apple does both in free updates. They just don't update as often as Microsoft does with weekly patches.

I agree with you Jeremy, Windows XP as likened to a Crayola mashup!

TBH any Windows version is easy to use, sorry but if you cannot use it then you are lacking something!

My 70yr old mother can use Windows 7 and 8 and does not find issue with either.

Most negative comments are from those who listen to idiots who are not techies and love to dumb down a large company! grow up!

While I don't find issue with Windows in any guise, I do complain to the company on specific areas, but then that's constructive as its to the company opposed to a rant on a web forum that will get you nowhere. If you hate a product so much then join the beta teams and feedback your gripes.

I agree, David. NONE of the Windows versions are rocket science and if you have that much trouble using a P.C., then maybe you're better off using a console, or some such device - especially if you're only playing games and using email. Computers do NOT run themselves - deal with it! rolleyes
It's like when you buy a new car - yes, it will take a few weeks to become fully proficient with it, unless it's exactly the same as the one you bought, (then why would you buy another?, LoL!). Complaining and blaming an O.S. because it's new and you're not used to it, is like blaming a new pair of shoes because they are new.:confused

Well, then I must be lacking something. I'm OK with that. I hated ME, I hated Vista. No amount of time spent with either made them easier for me to use, nor did it get me liking them any more.

We are not criticizing people who hate a particular O.S., (I hated M.E., too). We are criticizing people who hate them and preach against them just because they are not used them, and because they are repeating what some mountain of misinformation told them and just like to bash it because M.S. made it, as David said.
Nothing wrong with hating something that does actually suck, obviously.rolleyes

It can and will if you learn how to use it.

I actually like UAC as it does add an extra layer of security allowing people to finally log in as a standard user and then elevate for one process or task (which allows more control for administrators) which does begin to add protection to the OS and to the user.

I know it's not perfect but it's a start, and coupled with all the patching Microsoft does it makes it a heck of a lot more secure than MacOS or Linux.

We are not ignoring it, we need time to get our stingy bosses to agree to the upgrade, we need time to make sure everything will work, we need time to train administrators to administer it, we need time to have hardware upgrades approved where necessary, we need time...

Go to Windows 8, where the games no longer exist ;)

Please state the nature of the solitaire emergency.
