I had my laptop in for service (hard drive failed) and instead of doing a fresh reinstall of Windows 10, as I expected him to do, the tech installed Windows 11 instead. Since my product key for my original install of Windows 10 is likely long gone, where can I find a replacement key to activate Windows 10 when I do the reinstall myself? I have seen some websites offering "free" product keys for different Microsoft products, but I am not sure if they are safe or legit? Any advice would be appreciated.

I may be wrong seeing how I have never done it, but the key for 11 may very well work for 10 as well. I have used 10 keys to upgrade to 11, so it stands to reason. If I am wrong I am sure someone with more knowledge will speak up. BTW, you can use a program available here to retrieve key : https://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/magical_jelly_bean_keyfinder.html
I would also ask the tech for the key. He should have it, if what he installed is legit.

Did this have 10 on it originally? The key may be in the BIOS or MS might have a record of the activation, either way get Win 10 and install it then see if it is activated or will activate before buying a key.

I've heard the same about the keys being interchangeable. I will definitely check out the software! Thank you!

Yes, it came with Windows 10. I didn't think about the key being stored in the BIOS. Thanks for bringing that up. I'm hoping changing out the hard drive didn't erase it. I'll have to do some research on how to look in the BIOS. I did it once before, but it's been a while. Thanks for your reply!!

Is Win11 activated? If so why bother reinstalling 10? If not, ask the tech to sort out getting it activated. Can't see much point in reinstalling 10 myself.

Because Windows 11 makes me want to tear my hair out. I much prefer 10, so want to stay with that.
