A friend of mine asked me if I could try to see if there's spyware/adware on his computer. He says that occasionally when he's not connected to the Internet he'll have pop-ups, but I have yet to see them. How can I determine if there's spyware on a computer? Is there a way that I can make this determination without utilities or do I absolutely need spyware utilities.

Unless you are the master of all computer knowledge, you are going to need tools. Use the tutorial on your friends computer.
