Last week my computer had trouble at start-up, and I found that Zone Alarm was causing errors that wouldn't allow it to start. This was not the first time I had trouble with zone alarm. I have a gateway computer with windows 98se. I tried sygate yesterday, but it kept mentioning that smc was not responding causing an internet explorer error, and others (cleanup, avg, etc). What freeware firewall would you suggest for my computer?

What version of ZA are you using?
It is possible that the version you are using is not for W98SE.
For example, ZoneAlarm Free 7.0.302.000 suits Win XP/2K, only.
I used the appropriate ZA version on W98SE for years, with no problem.:D

Check out http://www.oldversion.com/ for 1453 versions of 131 programs, including ZA.

    Don't type in http://www.oldversions.com/ (plural)
You' ll get an oldtimers site. :D

If you installed Sygate and your having problems you probably have remnants of the previous ZA firewall causing conflict's
This would probably be the case with any Firewall you try

    Uninstall ZA http://www.hackfix.org/software/uninstall/zone.html#uninstall

IMO the last good version of ZA was 4.5 after that I went to Sygate and never looked back nor have I had one single problem with Sygate & I've used it on 98se, W2k, XP home & pro

comodo firewall has become popular. i have been using it for a while now and have had no trouble with it. have a look at the firewall page here at MG's http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads34.html it may help you make a choice....

I tried downloading the older version of sygate, and everything seemed okay. And then my computer began to run slower. Systems resources went from 73% to 53%. The internet then froze, computer went to safe mode, and other things. Not sure which zone alarm I did have to try to check if completely uninstalled if that is my problem. What should I do?
