Helping a friend with computer shutting down unexpectedly. Took precaution of checking for spyware/malware and see she has problems. I ran the scans. Logs attached.

MGTools ran successful but it was unable to create log. UAC was turned off and I ran as administrator.

Need to know what to do about malware that was found but instructed by you guys not to delete until you adviced me what to do first.

    Thanks,

    Dwayne

    Welcome to Major Geeks!
Where exactly did you look for the log?

I looked for the log in C:/ (the C drive) where i ran the application from (as instructed). The DOS Prompt window told me that the log was not created. I checked and it was not.

Please click Start, All Program, Accessories and you will see ( among other things ) a Command Prompt entry.
    • Right click the Command Prompt entry and select Run As Administrator.
      • It is critical that you run it this way.
    • If you do this properly, a command prompt window will open with a title of Administrator Command Prompt.
    • Enter the below commands at the command prompt each followed by the enter key. The bold black are commands. The purple/brown is merely informational.
cd \MGtools <-- this changes to the MGtools folder and the prompt should change to C:\MGtools>
SN64 <-- this will try to run all one scan from MGtools. Tell me what error messages, if any, you see.
nwktst <-- this will try to run all one scan from MGtools. Tell me what error messages, if any, you see.
GRK64 <-- this will try to run all one scan from MGtools. Tell me what error messages, if any, you see.
getnetinf<-- this will try to run all one scan from MGtools. Tell me what error messages, if any, you see.

Now look for the C:\MGlogs.zip file and attach it ( if it exists ) no matter what happened while doing the above.

After entering the first command "cd \MGtools" in the Administrator Command Prompt Window I get "the system cannot find the specified path". Other commands not entered.

    Sorry I'm an idiot...

I attached a pic of the \mgtools scan. Running other commands at the moment. Will post results when finished.

Delete the below file unless you are 100% sure that it is not a problem. Hitman believes it is.
    C:\Users\Sharla Burkeen\AppData\LocalLow\Retrogamer_4wEI\Installr\Cache\001B31C9.exe

    Also delete the below file:
    C:\Windows\tasks\PC Optimizer Pro64 startups.job

    And uninstall the below:
    Ask Toolbar
    Fast Search by Surf Canyon
    PC Optimizer Pro

Re-run RogueKiller and run a scan. After it finishes the scan, select the Registry tab and then select any of the below that exist (uncheck anything else) and then click the Delete button.

    Then immediately reboot your PC.

After reboot, run a new scan with RogueKiller and save a log as in original instructions and attach the new log.

Now be patient while doing the below. The fixes can take quite awhile to run. Especially the permissions repairs. It may be best to kick it off and goto bed or do something else. It is better not to run anything while the repairs are going on.

Download Windows Repair by Tweaking.com and unzip the contents into a newly created folder on your desktop.
    • Now run Repair_Windows.exe by double clicking on it ( if you are running Vista or Win 7, use right click and select Run As Administrator)
    • Now select the Start Repairs tab.
    • The click the Start button.
    • Create a System Restore point if prompted.
    • On the next screen, click the Unselect All button to first deselect all repairs.
    • Now select the following repair options:
      • Reset Registry Permissions
      • Reset File Permissions
      • Register System Files
      • Repair WMI
      • Repair Windows Firewall
      • Remove Policies Set By Infections
      • Repair Winsock & DNS Cache
      • Repair Proxy Settings
      • Repair Windows Updates
      • Set Windows Services To Default Startup
    • Now on the lower right side check the box to Restart/Shutdown System When Finished
    • Then make sure the Restart System radio button is enabled.
    • Shutdown any other programs that you are running now before continuing.
    • Now click the Start button.
    • Be patient while the tool repairs the selected items.
    • It should reboot automatically when finished.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • the new RogueKiller log
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
    How are things working now?

The purpose of running the Windows Repair program was to repair the Windows FIrewall and a few other services. Did you run it exactly as requested? Did you have any problems or errors? I can see it did not work as expected based on your new logs as several services are still disabled. Perhaps Comcast and any other protection software is getting in the way and needs to be shutdown first.

Also MGtools is not running all the way. You are missing logs inside the ZIP file. Shutdown you Comcast protection software before running it? Did you notice HijackThis popping up and asking for your approval? Close all windows and run it again? Sometimes the window for HijackThis does not pop to the top. You must click the Accept button twice to get it to run. Also make sure you allow MGtools to run all the way thru to completion.

Now copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

Now please download Farbar Service Scanner and run it on the computer with the issue.
    • Put a check mark in each option box on the left side.
    • Click "Scan".
    • It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.
    • Please attach this log to your next reply.

fixme.reg was successfully added to registry.
MGtools does not save a log. I have to run it the way you ask me to do so in your earlier post to me. I have attached screenshots of the DOS prompt window scan results so you can see that these logs are not successfully created.

I did run the Windows Repair Utility as instructed. All went well and I thought this would fix my Firewall issue.

    Farbar Scanner Results attached.

Don't forget to read my post before this one for other info. on MGtools.

    Thanks.

The logs are created. They just are failing to be Zip'ped into the ZIP file. My best guess as to why this is failing is due you having your protection software enabled and it is getting in the way. Please shut down all protection sofware and try again. Also make sure that UAC is still disable per instructions in the READ & RUN ME.

Sorry for my late reply, but I got busy.

We will have to shut this thread down. My friend picked up her laptop. With your help I resolved the issue of installing Windows 7 SP1 update. Still could not turn on Windows Firewall. I installed Comodo Firewall for her and AVG Free and told her not to install Comcast Bundled Security Protection. Scanned her computer with Malwarebytes and Superantispyware and of course the programs you advised and found many infections and cleaned them. She admitted to browsing porn sites. That will always do it but you can't blame people for this can we?

Anyway thanks for your help Chasling.

You're welcome. We should have complete final cleanup instructions to remove things we have installed but since you do not have the PC anymore, we cannot do this.

I would appreciate it if you post these removal instructions so that the next time I have access to this laptop I can remove these applications.

I do appreciate your time and I want you to know that I understand how much time you spend helping people you do not know and probably you do this without getting paid. So just letting you know that I'm very thankful to you.

    Thanks again,

    Dwayne

    You're welcome.
    Okay then here they are.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. You can uninstall RogueKiller and HitManPro.
    2. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista or Win 7, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    8. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
