that's alot of memory for it to be using (mine is using 38k and im on firefox 1.5). try closing extra firefox windows, maybe a reboot might solve the problem. if problem persists i would make sure i didn't have any spyware on the computer.

FireFox is a bit of a resourse hog. I use K-meleon, Firefoxes little brother.
Some disagree, but if firefox consumes too much CPU, and RAM, I would use K-meleon.
Even with that said, there is a way to minimize cpu, and ram usage. Many more people here are more familliar, but Firetune, is suposed to help.
For me, there is just toooo many uneeded plugins.
This is why I use K-Meleon....Very basic, and fast!
If there is a clear answer to your question, maybie I would even switch.
    But keep the dollar!

Firefox is a great browser and I used it for a long time till I too discovered it to be a resource hog. Quit using Firefox for quite a while till I read of a way to limit it's use of resources. Seems to work, so I'm back to using the browser.

If you want to keep Firefox from using a lot of resources do the following:

    1. Open firefox
    2. In the address bar, type 'about:config' (without the quotes)
    3. Press enter
    4. Right click anywhere, and select New --> Integer
    5. Type 'browse.cache.memory.capacity' (without the quotes)
    6. Click ok
    7. Type in the amount of memory you want firefox to use. 16384 for 16 MB is appropriate, double that for 32.
    8. Click ok
    9. Restart Firefox

Hope it takes care of your problem.

I was gonna say somthing close to that, but I wasn't sure, so I stopped

For average users with average PC's, on my web page under K-Meleon tweaks, are more ways to speed up K-meleon, and Fire fox...
Of course fire fox has more tweaks to be abled, but there are some good speed tweaks that work for both.possibly worth a look.
My best bud applied to his FF and he was happy :)

    can you tell me
    A. how do I find out what memory firefox is using.
    B. how do I know what amount of memory I am running
    i.e. 16 or 32MB.

Open the Task Manager (right click an empty spot on your Taskbar and select Task Manager-in XP)
look for firefox.exe and then look at the column 'Mem Usage' for it.
    :)

Hey, that's cool :D I've been looking for that for ages! I'm guessing that hat setting will work under Linux as well .... All I wonder is what impact it has on performance.

Huh - weird. I set the value to 32 and it's still inflating like a baloon when I open lots of tabs. 7 tabs open and it's using 50MB - which is much better than before, but it's not 32MB. Perhaps this is the allocation per tab?

Yeah, I noticed Firefox is a memory hog at times (before I changed the about:config it was at something like 162MB). I have FreeRAM running in the background, and as time goes by I can see the little meter slowly decreasing from the 200-odd MB it started at, to 150, to lower (I have 512MB RAM). A common, temporary method is restarting the browser (shutting it down, waiting a minute or two to regain the memory, then starting up the browser). While about:config does help greatly, I tend to use the other method quite often because Firefox still likes to eat memory sometimes. After having the browser running for about an hour, it's using 104MB...and slowly increasing. :p
I think there are a couple more things to help memory usage, but I can't remember them off the top of my head.

I discovered the Memory Usage Task Manager column recently as well. :D

right. I have never done things like this before,
so I take notice(in the background) and try these things out.
I cant really see how firefox is a memory hog.
when I open I.E. it is using approx. the same amount of mem.
when in open browser. so surely this is the norm.
Does it not really depend on your system spec's, as to whether your system is going to suffer or not?.
