I think things like that happen via divine intervention!!!!

Don't mean to take your flame away, Goldy (no pun intended!!) but one time I went into my parents house, it was full of smoke....the cats had knocked the heat lamp off of the lizard tank and it had landed flat on the floor (ofcourse) and had burned a hole completely through the floor, and was still sitting there!!!! Situations like that...you often wonder if, what happened, didn't happen, when it happened!!!!

Close call indeed Goldy! Glad you caught it in time.

Somewhat reminiscent of Wenchie's kitchen fire some time back. In both cases, something flammable was on the stove (or hob, as you call it). First rule of stove safety is don't leave anything flammable on it. Flat-surface stove tops like yours make inviting work surfaces, but resist the urge.

Is that cat as large as it looks in the photo, or is it just the perspective of the photo. Looks huge!

Sometimes these close calls happen, we just need to use them as learning experience so that we don't have a disaster in the future. But sounds like you already have made a few changes.

I have a spare front door key buried in a jar with an oily rag in it in case I do the ol' wind has blown door shut, and I can't get in trick .

I have a chemical fore extinguisher in the kitchen, just in case. 'Cause that's only of use if you're inside, but still handy to have.

Yep, a lot of people make the mistake of the smoke alarms in the corner of the ceilings, because they think it looks better that way, which it ay do, but also makes them pretty useless, like you said.

I have a gas cook-top, which is even more scary, as I could gas myself if I don't make sure everything is completely switched off. I had one of those cheapo plastic grills fall off the exhaust fan above the stove when it was on one night, which would have been bad enough, but the whole house became filled with thick, poisonous smoke, and carbonised cyanate soot and smoke. There was a power cut too, at the same time, so I wasn't a happy camper, LoL!
