With Firefox 3, I haven't been able to clear the list that drops down from the address bar (when you click on the arrow at the right hand side).

How can I clear this list?

    Thanks!

Tools / Options / privacy ---> uncheck the search box and drop the history down to 1 day if you want. Also check the box to clear your private history at the bottom.

I don't use Firefox but ATF-Cleaner from Atribune should to it. It is the safest cleaner ever made. Link here.

These are the settings I have.
I go to Tools / Clear Private Data and clear everything when I'm done with the computer.

You should definitely not accept third party cookies. Remove that check mark. Also you should clear all cookies every now and then...

    Done. Thank you!

I'm lazy. I just click ATF-Cleaner when a quick and full sweep is called for. I also have CCleaner installed. I let them take turns. :-D CCleaner can do more - ATF-Cleaner can't clean or delete keys from the the registry. It is a cleaner and just that. It's very safe and convenient.

I've tried ATF Cleaner, CCleaner, FireFox Clear Private Data, ... and the drop down list still appears.

I'm surprised to hear that but then I'm not a Firefox user. Sorry. Thanks for letting me know. :-D

Here's the drop down list that I see when I click on the arrow in the address bar. I don't know what the stars are. I'm guessing "SU" means "StumbleUpon"? I've used StumbleUpon for a very long time and have never had problems with it not being cleared out. I hope that program isn't the problem?

Ahhh nuts. I just found this in my Stumble "Tools".

I'm going to remove the checkmark to "save favourites & tags to a Firefox bookmark folder".
I'm going to add a checkmark to "clear search history upon exit".

Gonna reboot the computer and see if the drop down list disappears.

Because Google offers a version of Firefox with a Google Toolbar pre-installed they also have guidelines about how to clear Firefox's cache & cookies. Link here.

About the screenshot: you wouldn't happen to have the same pages bookmarked, would you?

Nuts. No change. Drop down list still there.

A few of them I have saved in my bookmarks, and some I've rated as "I like it" with StumbleUpon. Hmmm, thanks for asking! I didn't clue into that at all! lol

Under Firefox 2.0.0.15, and likely several earlier, all you needed to do to get rid of a URL in your drop-down history was to click the down arrow to open the menu, highlight, but not click on the desired (undesired) URL, and hit the Delete key. Voila! Bad URL gone, good URLs remain for future convenience. People with empty history drop-downs make me very suspicious as to what they've been up to.rolleyes

I tried the delete key, but the list just loops and comes back. Thanks for the suggestion, but doesn't seem to work for this.

No need to jump to conclusions. I'm a neat freak and I hate clutter.

Please re-read my above post, all the entries in the address drop down list can be seen in my bookmarks as well as sites I've rated on StumbleUpon. I'm not hiding anything. I didn't appreciate your assumption. If you look at the screenshot, did you see any bad URL's? No.

I was jumping to no conclusions, nor making any assumptions about you personally. I offered a possible partial solution that works in my version of FF that I consider more elegant (for me) than wiping the whole list. I could fathom no reason why it would be deprecated in FF3. The drop-down, for me, serves as a convenient, quick list of recently visited sites that I do not have to fish through my bookmarks to find. The smilie at the end of my last sentence served to indicate the tongue-in-cheek nature of the statement.

Perhaps try the same with Shift-Delete, and see if that works, if you care to try.

I just tried both ways, and nope, still there. I have it set so that I don't keep a history under Privacy settings. It appears that it's only saving those sites that I've bookmarked and rated on StumbleUpon. No biggie that it's saved, just looks like clutter to me, lol.

    Thanks for everyones help!

A bit of guesswork here: Did you reboot after changing the settings? Or perhaps you need to repeat the cleaning procedure. After changing settings you didn't tell Firefox to clear the list. You only told it to stop registering. I think? :heli

Firefox is listing sites you've rated on StumbleUpon. But isn't that a feature from an extension that you have to download yourself? A button or something? Perhaps the features that comes with that button can be costumized?

  23. Oooops!

    Oooops! MajorGeek

Ok, I double checked my Firefox privacy settings and Stumble history setting to make sure it's not saving a history. I tried the shift delete again, CCleaner, and rebooted. Still there.
    :confused

I've been looking at the "Tools" button that StumbleUpon has, and I can't find anything else to click on that might change this. I'll post what I have........

Could it be "Prefetch stumbles" from the screenshot in the middle? Try to uncheck the box and tell Firefox it to clean the list again. You can always put the mark back in. :-D

I just found this, maybe I can't clear the drop down list?

    Smart Location Bar

In Firefox 3 the Location bar has been completely revamped in extremely exciting ways. Affectionately nicknamed the “AwesomeBar”, the new Smart Location Bar lets you use the URL field of your browser to do a keyword search of your history and bookmarks. You no longer have to remember the domain of the page you’re looking for — the Smart Location Bar will match what you’re typing (even multiple words!) against the URLs, page titles, and tags in your bookmarks and history, returning results sorted according to an algorithm that combines frequency and recency.

The Smart Location Bar results also show pages’ favicons, full titles, URLs, and whether you have bookmarked or tagged the site previously. While the change from Firefox 2 to Firefox 3 can be a little jarring for some, once you’ve used the Smart Location Bar for a while, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without it.

I'm a Firefox user, have my settings as shown below and don't get a drop down list on the address bar. After adjusting the settings, get out off FF and restart FF. Try it, hope this helps as I'm still a newbie.

Oops, forgot to save the crop in the 2nd pic...

Looks like I'm stuck with it, that's ok, there's much worse things that could happen.

Type about:config in the address bar and urlbar in the filter
go down to browser.urlbar.maxRichResults and change the value to 0. Close FF, reopen and you should not see any drop-down addresses.
