After installing Firefox 5.0 I soon encountered problems. With links opening in the same tab and back-forward not functioning the browsing experience is a little like trying to drive a car with a faulty transmission and no reverse gear. At this point in time I am seriously considering abandoning Firefox and trying something else. Then again, an older version (of Firefox) may be the solution. Any suggestions?

Try downloading Firefox aurora as it is now up to version 6.0a2 and see if your problems go then.

Just set the options and toolbars the way you want them, within a few minutes it can look and behave just as FX3.x/4.x did.

Yeah, why not stick with an older version until 5.0 is out of the beta stage? I'm always a bit puzzled when I see folks who are using beta versions of software complain when they encounter problems.

Agree with the above statement. Though, some of us do use alphas also, like me win FF7.0a1

I have learned a painful and humiliating lesson and will never go near an alpha again, promise. Thanks for the suggestions. I might check out 6.0a2, however, as suggested above.

I should have said "as suggested below".

I also tried Firefox 4.0.1 but the same thing happened - no back forward. So far I haven't been able to find the bug.

Thanks, but I've already been there. It isn't that the back-forward buttons are missing but that they do not function - they are inert decorative boxes. Firefox also has a thread for non-functioning back-forward too but so far nothing offered there has worked. For the time being I went back to 3.6 (which works like it should) but they keep trying to update me to a newer improved version that doesn't unless one is smart enough (that excludes me) to spend several hours or more fixing it himself. Apparently, the fix is trial and error process with many different possibilities to try.

I've never experienced this problem, what happens when you click and hold the back or forward button, do you then get a list of historic pages for that tab?

Links opening in the same tab can be changed in just a few clicks in the options. Alternatively, middle-clicking a link will open it in a new tab, background or switch-to, again the option for either is available,

You had the Navigation toolbar displayed, right? So, what was on the left end of the web address box? Or, do you mean the button was there but it didn't do anything? If the button was there, did you try right clicking on it. That displays a list of the visited websites and you should be able to go back or forward to any site in the list.

Hello! I don't know what's going on. Firefox was working just fine. I hadn't done a chkdsk in a long time, so I did one. After that, and not finding any problems. FF would not start. I kept getting balloon saying FF crashed and I should send a report. I sent several reports. I then decided to reinstall FF. I did a over the top and it done a up grade. FF is working just fine now. Computers drive me crazy. Is there a logical explanation for this??:confused:confused. Thank you!! I have 4.0.1 version FF
