    In Firefox 8 System Requirements
    https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/8.0/system-requirements/
they say that Recommended Hardware is "Pentium 4 or newer processor that supports SSE2". I'm using a Pentium III.

I am currently using Firefox 3.6.24. My question is what is the effect if I install Firefox 8. Will it work at all? Will it just slower? Or What?

What is the newest Version that I can safely use?

It's a little faster than 3.6.24 and should be fine on your system, but Firefox still has serious memory leak issues. Also, depending on which ones you have installed, you are likely to find some add-ons are not yet compatible with version 8.

The below link is from Pale Moon browser which gives a bit more info than Firefox what system requirements are compatible with what versions. PM is an optimized version of Firefox.

AFAIK Firefox's 3.6.* versions will still be supported for some months.

I have been using Pale Moon for a year or so now.
It is faster and more secure than FF.
I am using PM 3.6.27 because the new version is not compatible with Speed Dial.

I have not seen this mentioned anywhere on the Palemoon site.
Speed and efficiency is what is noted.

100% Firefox sourced: As safe as the browser that has seen years of development.

So Palemoon is as secure as Firefox.

I don't get as much adware as i did with FF so if it is a personal thing then for me it is more secure than FF.
