Firefox causing crashes in Windows 7 64 bit?

    Has anyone experienced this?

    Just for background:

    Win 7 64 bit
    i7 CPU
    6GB RAM

As per HP, after having many crashes, I did a Factory Restore on Monday. I have only installed a few things, and very slowly to check out performance. Things were going great until last night when I experience a BSOD while using Firefox (nothing else running).

Since I haven't really installed anything other than Office, Outlook, and FF, I am now thinking FF may be to blame after searching and finding this:

    http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/forum/1/507610

    I am using FF v.3.6

This is extremely disappointing since I despise IE. I tried using it starting this morning and ended up installing Chrome. I am going to not use FF and see if I get anymore crashes.

My question: has anyone here had a problem using FF and a 64bit OS?

    Hi Laura

No on Fx, and pretty much same spec as you, Win7 x64 6GB ram etc, ok will be differing hardware and likely security.

Normally dont suggest this but try the x64 versions from the off-shoot programs from Mozilla for Firefox and actually try the latest trunk build top download HERE its Minefield the next development build of Firefox and I do like this version, been running it since it was released with no issues.

*note is its alpha so not even a beta or RC version yet so may have glitches, not that I seen any yet, plus I find it quicker than plain old Fx

But also try no-addons mode as in most caes its the damn add-ons as they are not quality checked as much as they should be and the thorn in Mozillas side imho.

EDIT: on second thougths go with the 32bit Minefield from HERE as you will have issues with Flash plugin on x64 as Adobe in their wisdom have no plugin for 64bit yet!!! and another note not all add-ons work with the test version (addblock and no script do)

Hi Bill. Thanks. Not sure what's up with the computer. Thinking it'll be going into HP.

As far as suggestions box, you have to right click on it and check the make suggestions option. :)

Thanks D. I may give it a go. Right now though, I may just stick with Chrome and see how that goes. Things were running great (as I had been telling you) until last night. Thinking back to before the restore, I did get crashes while on FF and never considered it as being the cause. :(

    Hi L

Cool on Chrome, also do concider Minefield or Flock, Flock is based on Mozilla but with a twist, however if Chrome works then thats your browser (always say use what you like, none are good or bad)

lol...at this point I'm just trying to figure out what's going on with this damn laptop.

I'll download Minefield and see how it goes. Thanks!:)

Also, does FF need to be unintalled before installing Minefield?

    Hi Laura

Yes I would just to make sure no left overs are left over (cannot believe I typed that), and see how you go, the link to the 32bit Minefield is a test one but updates daily, so run check for updates on it on regular basis, no need to do it daily, unless you want to.

can save your Favorites and import into Minefield as Fav Manager is similar, Adblock and No-script work ok for plugins (not many others do but trial and error may see what works or not) Showcase, SplitBrowser and vaccumeplaces are all I have, but using the Addons menu and then Get Addons, search for topic or add-on you need and it will list only compatible ones.

*although you may know I'm not a big fan of add-ons as they will be are likely are becoming Fx's biggest achillies heal and will be the route malware writers take to get into that browser, but another topic I feel.

I'm not a fan of addons either. The only two I use are adblock and WOT. I've totally uninstalled FF using Revo Pro, so I'll try Minefield. I'm not sure how it's going to be different than FF though seeing as it's the same company.

Minefield looks exactly like FF. weird

It does doesnt it! its much more improved core, so memory leaks shouldnt be much of an issue now, Laura do let me know how you go with it.

    Laura,

Its true, Firefox 4 on the windows 7 ultimate 64 bit is BUGGY. Basically due to addon incompatibility issues like if you https everywhere etc. The window will freeze and not allow clicks or noscript will not offer the toolbar to allow javascript. This is unfortunate and I have been messaging mozilla with feedback about it. Hopefully they will update it soon. For the time being IE 9 will be your best bet to browse without issues.

Hi Tru, this thread's a little old now, the version of Fx under discussion was 3.6.

FWIW, my 64-bit Home version of W7 works fine with Fx 4 and Pale Moon 4 with a number of Add-ons loaded.

Yep. As satrow said, this was an old issue. It turned out to be faulty hardware that has since been replaced.

If you are having issues still, I'd also recommend Pale Moon browser. Even though FF works great now without issues, pale moon is my browser of choice (it looks just like FF, btw)
