Are you saying you can't download the file? As far as I can tell both MS links are to the same file(I don't think second one is just an update) so you can use either one. You want vcredist_x86.exe so try getting it from here.

Thanks for jumping in sach2. I am hoping Visual C++ 2005 would help because msvcr80.dll was initially used by Visual C++ 2005. I am pretty sure avast installs Visual C++ 2008. Technically it is supposed to be backward compatible. But, I am not very confident installing C++ 2005 will work. It was my last idea. I just do not understand the conflict between the msvcr80.dll in the WinSxS directory and firefox as firefox has it's own msvcr80.dll.

I will have to back out tonight, very early call tomorrow.
I'll check in tomorrow to read any further postings and decide what next to do.
Many thanks to all for this help

I hope to be getting in touch with FF help. It took some navigating around. FF error messages kept me from getting directly to the FF help/TS site, from sundry links.
Most any attempt to use a shortcut desktop icon is fruitless
So far, nothing has changed as far as those error messages, except they are becoming a PIA having to work around them so much.:(
Of course I am still open to any suggestions.
    Thanks,

Did you try a portable version of FF as I mentioned in post #8?

Not unexpectedly, I am having problems getting that to download.
I keep getting Not responding when I try to download.
    I am still trying

Got it loaded on flash drive.

    Hi,

Where are you now? You created a restore point. Have you tried to install the C++ 2005 file?

  11. Skysarge

    Skysarge First Sergeant

I had tried installing C++2005 but it will not load (01-02-12 21:33_)

When you say will not load do you mean will not download or will not run the downloaded file? It sounded like you had problems downloading the file. I posted the file you want to download in this post. http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showpost.php?p=1698371&postcount=53

If you have trouble downloading it in FF then try IE.

    ********
How did this all start? If it just began out of nowhere a few days ago, you might want to attempt a System Restore to an older restore point to see if it helps. If it doesn't help you can always use the option of Undo the last restore to get back to where we are now.

The dowload process starts off, goes through some steps. When the Progress window comes up it does not show any activity. After a few minutes this window goes off screen, but there is no record of the download.

I will need to come back to this again tomorrow.
I am up very early, so if I get signed on late in the eve, I am unable to work at the computer very long.
If there are some other steps you recommend, please let me know and I will work on all I can tomorrow.

    Thank you.

I'm not that familiar with IE.

It looks like ctrl + J should bring up downloads window. Then in Options at bottom right should tell you the downloads folder. Click the Browse button and see what is there.

I'd seriously consider trying a system restore to before the problem. Might be a simple fix for the problem.

    Well, fiddlesticks.
This is becoming a comledy of errors in its own right.
Answered your last posting, cued send and my reply went trucking off to never never land with Peter.

Restore point was made, and it is Jan 2.
I cannot find any other rp. I know it has been a while, and it may have been before I had to reload Win XP.

The C++2005 I got onto a flash drive. I haven't the slighest idea what who when where or how with that program.

The C++2005 should just be an installer. You should be able to just double click to install it. If it won't install from the flash drive, try copying to the desktop and then double-click.

Asa lengthy as this is getting, I think a synopsis might help.
    Firefox crashed when starting up
Any attempts to use desktop shortcuts or to open FF get error messafe FF had to close.

    Code 0x000000d
    Crash ID: bp-2849bc5d-0e57-41da-aec8-57b7b2101223
    Windows Operating System
    ID: 1000
    Source: Application Error
    Version: 5.2
    Symbolic Name: ER_USERCRASH_LOG
Message: Faulting application %1, version %2, faulting module %3, version %4, fault address 0x%5.

Faulting application firefox.exe, version 8.0.1.4341, faulting module msvcr80.dll, version 8.0.50727.6195, fault address 0x00048b76.

    Action taken to resolve issue:

Uninstall FF, clean install updated version
System restore Jan 2, no prior restores available - old HD had to be
    replaced
Downloaded C+2005 to flash drive, not loaded to computer as of yet.
    Updated add ons
Contacted Mozilla for help, no response as of today.
Attempted to load FF in safe mode, cannot, error message appears.
Portable was downloaded to Flash Drive.

Some items downloaded to flash drive have not been run, as I am not sure what they are to accomplish and what I need to do once they are on my computer.
I will be in and out today, so if anyone can post on this I will get back ASAP. I think it might be easier to come back to a task or list of tasks to work on, rather than sit and wait. Being a volunteer I know I cannot stop everything and run to my computer dozens of times a day.

You do not put the portable FF on your computer. You run FF from the USB stick.

    OK,
Sorrry for delay. It is utter chaos around here with all that is going on.
I loaded Portable Apps on the flash drive, the browsed the program.
I guess I am denser than I thought. What do I do with the program?
    Thanks

Click on the FF icon, same as if it were installed.
    http://file.walagata.com/w/perk/MjG/portableFF.jpg

Note: because it is running off a USB stick, it will be slower. This is normal. I just want to see if there is a problem with the sites you are currently having a problem with.

  24. Skysarge

    Skysarge First Sergeant

OK, looks like I got to FF home page

So the portable works without throwing up an error on the computer.
I'd use something like Revo Uninstaller to completely remove Firefox because something is damaged in your installed version. Rather than trying to figure out what it is, it less time consuming to wipe and do a clean install.
But before you wipe it, export your bookmarks so you can import when you do a clean install.
Since FF won't open, you need to use Window Explorer and go to
    C:\Documents and Settings\your user name on this computer\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\alphanumericstring.default
    and find bookmarks.html
That's the file you want to move to your desktop for safe keeping.
You can fire up the portable version on the USB stick and import those bookmarks into it too.

    Did not help.
As soon as FF reloaded it crashed and, error msg "AppName: firefox.exe AppVer: 8.0.1.4341 ModName: msvcr80.dllModVer: 8.0.50727.6195 Offset: 00048b76" came up

  27. plodr

    plodr Major Geek Super Extraordinaire

okay, every version of FF you are using should be 9.0.1 (that's what is on the portable app site and what Mozilla links to download give you).
Yet your error points to ff.exe as version 8.0, something is wrong.
You have an old version of FF causing these problems.

Search for ff.exe 8.0.1 etc and when you find it, look at the folder it is in and post the path.

IMHO, windows XP search is useless.
I use VoidTools Search Everything http://www.voidtools.com/

  28. Skysarge

    Skysarge First Sergeant

I went back and looked through various segments, then did a Win Search and Search Everything. I could have missed it, but I find nothing than what I know is loaded. Then again, I have no ideas what half of the stuff listed is. is I finally accessed that the version currently on C drive is 9.0.1 on drive C.
Install dir shows a version of FF was deleted, but I have not found out which one.
So, round whatever is coming up, and I am still in The Computer Twilight Zone. Where is Rod Serling when you need him?

    Will check back tomorrow.

More often that not, sending "help" to program maker get replies for either more info, or solutions to try. If the latter, the response usually indicates the reader/responder has screened the help request and answered in a way that hopefully helps.
[I]Mozilla is a non-profit ortganization[/I], I am told, who use volunteers to answer questions via their email system. They save money by not having phone service. I did not read anything about whether they are trained in Firefox troubleshooting.
I queried them about my FF crashing, sent a copy of the crash report, the error message I got, and what I have done to try and correct the problem.
I got two responses from their volunteers, both suggesting I try something I already tried, and had stated so in the original inquiry.
A fellow co-worker suggested I try Google Chrome. That might be a solution.

    Uninstall FF again.
Go to Control Panel and ADD/Remove programs and unintsall FF. If it ask tell it to delete personal settings/profile.
Then go to C:\Program Files and delete the Mozilla Firefox folder.
Go to Start>Run and type in %appdata% and hit OK/Run
In the window that opens rename the Mozilla folder (if exists) MozillaOld

Now if you have any FF shortcuts on your computer double click them and see if FF opens, You should get target not found.

Edit: This is assuming you don't use Thunderbird as your email client.

    You do use Thunderbird?

From what I can tell the instructions will still stand I just made a change to rename the Mozilla Firefox folder in Program Files. I was just being cautious but from what I see on my computer Thunderbird has its own folders name Thunderbird and Mozilla Thunderbird. (I think years ago there was a Mozilla folder that had subfolders for both Thunderbird and Firefox but that does not look like the case anymore.)

    Uninstall FF again.
Go to Control Panel and ADD/Remove programs and unintsall FF. If it ask tell it to delete personal settings/profile.
Then go to C:\Program Files and rename the Mozilla Firefox folder to Mozilla Firefox Old.
Go to Start>Run and type in %appdata% and hit OK/Run
In the window that opens rename the Mozilla folder (if exists) MozillaOld

Now if you have any FF shortcuts on your computer double click them and see if FF opens, You should get target not found.

If we know FF is no longer installed then we can reinstall and see if the error message changes to reflect version 9.0.

So you did the uninstall and the folder renames and got the same error after a reinstall?

Maybe they didn't update an internal file if FF and it still identifies itself as part of ver. 8.0.:confused

I just wanted to make sure that it wasn't getting any information from an old profile even though you did a clean install previously.

I'll take another look around tomorrow.

    Go here
    Code:

and grab msvcr80.dll (612 kb) and put it in C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox folder
This is the version I am showing 8.00.50727.762
Your error is pointing to a different version
    faulting module msvcr80.dll, version 8.0.50727.6195

After you download it and before you place it in the Mozilla folder, scan it with your antivirus program.

Sorry, I removed the file today because I assumed you had gotten it. (I pay for storage and don't have that much so I do clean out old things to make room for new).

I ALWAYS right click and scan with my av and MBAM. I don't assume that they auto scan what O download (they might, I just want to be sure).

I am leaning more and more to replacing XP with Win 7.
Contacts with MS are fruitless. I purchased my original disc to load on my computer, a PC clone. Somehow the disc was damaged and is useless. MS gives me a routine about computer manufacturer support. As my computer is a clone...
And, obviously they do not support Mozillla. It seems also that Mozilla does not support Firefox.
I have been several weeks trying to determine what is causing this crash problem with Mozilla. With the help of you folks we have ruled out many possibilities. But, it is time consuming and frustrating, and no solution has been found.. Since the help you offer is free, and courtesy of unpaid volunteers, that is the nature of how it will be.
Unfortunatly, I have little time and a great deal of frustration.
I can find computer consultants, however the costs of a visit of any length would go a long way toward purchasing Win 7.
In the interim, I will loo at Google Chrome or revert to IEx.
Thanks to all who have offered and provided support for this problem. I greatly appreciate your time and effort.

And a note here. Should any of you need assistance with Ground Warfare problems, please feel free to contact me. I may not know computers, but I do know that. ;<)

I dont know if you solve the problems, but I just solved mine, my msvcr80 does not only gives error to firefox but thunderbird and also ie (seems becoz of shockwave), only google chrome runs.

I dont know which one is the key, or all of them should be done, but I just deleted all MSVC runtime (2005, 2008, 2010) in Add/Remove programs, cleans prefetch, cleans Firefox and thunderbird directory and reinstall only VC++2008 redist. And all of a sudden all software works again. Hope this helps.
