i visited a web site and got a message saying that the certificate from used by a Java applet was not from a trusted source and asking if I wanted to continue installing. I clicked yes, the web page never loaded correctly and now FireFox crashes intermittently and often. I did everything in the READ & RUN ME FIRST and the problem persists. The logs are attached. Please help.

Forgot to mention...When I run ComboFix, the problem goes away, but then it returns after I reboot.

Hi there and welcome. I am currently reviewing your set of logs and will get back to you with some instructions as soon as possible. Thanks for your patience during this time.

FYI though: Whilst I look thru the logs you need to update SAS by following the below instructions:

Important Notice: A new version of SUPERAntiSpyware is available.
    • Please uninstall your current version (this is necessary).
    • Then download this SUPERAntiSpyware
    • Install this new version. It may tell you that you need to reboot to complete the installation. You must reboot at this time.
    • After the reboot, run SUPERAntiSpyware and immediately click the Check for Updates button to get more updates for the database.
    • Now run a new full scan of your system. And attach this log later.

    Thanks
    Kes13!

I updated SAS and ran it. The log is attached.

    The symptoms persist.

Your logs are clean. Any issues that remain must be resolved in the software forum. :)

You can do the below, before I give you final instructions:

If you do not use Windows Messenger Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

    __________________________

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    3. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

I would also like to point out to you the below:

    C:\temp\labview\cracks

Read the information in the following link to see our views on cracks and keygens etc.

    Ok, I've removed Windows Messenger.

I mentioned previously that running ComboFix stops Firefox crashing, but when I reboot the computer, the crashing starts again. I must run ComboFix after every reboot to stop the crashing.

Can you tell from the logs what ComboFix is doing that might cause the crashes to stop?

    Thanks,
    David

that's not a good idea. You must stop using it now and find the cause of the crashing. This should be worked out in the software forum as I said because it is not malware related. My firefox constantly crashes for me too, however I most certainly wouldn't turn to running Combofix on a daily basis because of that fact. It's not a tool to be played around with. Good luck resolving issues in software, and I shall eagerly await yet another stability update from FF :) Try using firefox in it's safemode

I understand you didn't find anything in the logs, but I'm still suspicious that my problems are a result of malware for the following reasons.

    • The problem started exactly after visiting a specific web site and answering yes to installing a suspect Java applet.
    • The problem goes away after running ComboFix.
    • I just checked this, and the problem is affecting Internet Explorer too. It crashes just like FF.

Something happened when I visited that web site.

I'll try the software forum, but if you have any other suggestions, I'd be happy to hear them.

    Thanks for your help.

You are allowing all users to have Admin. privileges! That is a very bad idea!!

You also need to empty out your temp folders!

Also please try running the below online scan:

    http://www.superantispyware.com/onlinescan.html

Reboot immediately after scanning if it finds and removes anything. Let me know if anything was found. It does not save a log.

You will need to run SAS and MBAM on each user account!!

I ran the SAS online scan and it didn't find anything.

I emptied c:\temp. Not sure how to empty all the temp locations.

I installed Avast and it picked up a malware file that wasn't found by any of the other tools. The problem is now gone.

    Thanks for all the help!
