Firefox 'leftovers'

For ages I've noticed messages about Firefox - 'Firefox still running, please close' sort of thing. When I didn't have F/fox open, as far as I could see. (For instance, the Adanced System Care program warns it can't clean Browser while open, when so far as I can see, it isn't open.)

Recently, I've investigated more. I've had Task Manager open, on the 'Processes' tab. What I see is this :-

Immediately I call Firefox, a process appears in the list of running processes on TM - 'firefox.exe'. But, when I close F/fox, the process doesn't disappear. If I later open F/fox again, another instance of 'firefox.exe' appears. And, if I'm in-and-out of F/fox, a third, fourth - etc. I have seen as many as 6 or 8 copies running.

Why doesn't Firefox ' clean up after itself '? Is there anything I can do about this?

(Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit, F/fox is v 47.0, on Beta Update channel)

    Hi, Dave.

Chances are that either some setting (maybe some auto-cleaning on exit?) or a 3rd party interference like an Extension or your security software is causing it.

Process Explorer should enable you to check what's hooking into it, Starting Firefox in it's Safe Mode (hold down L Shift as you start it) should rule in/out all but an external interference

Thanks, satrow. I checked with Process Hacker (which I already had on the computer) and it only showed Free Download Manager as linked to Firefox. I tried start in Safe Mode, but it made no difference. (I've used FDM for ages, and never had any cause to think it caused any trouble.)

I've tweaked the privacy settings, and now Firefox Process clears down a few seconda after terminating the program.

Now it's closing within a few seconds? That sounds more normal - good work!
