firefox not loading MyYahoo

Ok, i finally talked my friend into using Firefox on her machine so I would not need to keep fixing it from hijacks, virusses, etc. However, her MyYahoo page will not load. Any ideas on that? There is still an about:blank hijack on the machine that I was having difficulty getting rid of (thus Firefox). Could this be effecting Firefox in some strange way? I think not, but I could be wrong. Or, is MyYahoo using something not supported by Firefox?

    Thanks,

Ok, I looked on the mozilla/firefox website and they do not list MyYahoo as one of the sites that doesn't support it. I am at work now but plan to go home in a bit and test it on my machine. I quite possibly could be that Yahoo uses something that isn't supported to do the personalization stuff. I will look into it and would greatly appreciate any other help.

    Thanks,

I have firefox and MyYahoo is visible in fact I use the Firefox 99.9% of the time now and am always in MyYahoo, Yahoo Mail, Yahoo Groups etc... Make sure that you have the current version of Firefox downloaded it should be Version 1.0 Mozilla Firefox 1.0 Final

Now as for having the about blank you should read the tutitorial and complete the steps listed in that and I am sure that will resolve the problem.
READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal

If you already have any of the programs linked in the tutorial please double check your version to make sure you have the latest one and that you have any/all updates for the programs.

NOTE: In order to resolve the issues you are having it is very important that you at least try to perform all the steps as outlined. If you have any difficulty please post back letting us know what steps you have completed, what you found while doing the scans if anything and details about any problems you have encountered in completing the steps. The more details you can provide the better

Please post back here after you have completed the tutitorial and like I mentioned above the more details you can provide the better..
By the way what is the Operating System on that computer that is having the problem??

The operating system is XP Home. I have done much more with some others on a seperate forum than the tutorial and about:blank keeps returning. This is not my machine (it is a friends machine) and it is not in my possesion at the now. I will try to get it back and run the tutorial things again plus the stuff others suggested and see what happens. This has been a good one to try and get rid of, and I have not heard of Firefox being affected before. I will post some logs and things when I get them.

There are many forms of about:blank hijacks. Some more difficult to remove than others. It is not easy to work these to begin with but doing it 3rd party is even more difficult and will take a longer time since you will have to keep going back to you friends in between.

Let's see what you have. Follow the guidelines below exactly and post your HJT log attachment.

Make sure you have HijackThis 1.99 and follow the guidelines on where to install it and how to post a log as an attachment. This is all covered in the sticky thread NO HIJACK THIS LOG FILES BEFORE READING THIS: HJT Tutorial & LOG File Posting

Now post a HijackThis log as an attachment to your message (Do not post the log inline). All running programs should be closed, including your web browser, e-mail. Close before running Hijack This!

To repeat: Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file. Place it in its own folder, for example C:\Program Files\HJT

It is VERY IMPORTANT that you do not reboot the PC after posting that log. That can cause the problem to spread and mutate making any suggested fixes I make useless.

After you fix your about:blank problem, you need to download something different to run Yahoo. I had this same problem and went to the Mozilla forums to get the answer. You have to download YahooPops! to make it work with Yahoo. That was with the .93 build. It might be different now with the 1.0, but it worked fine with the upgrade for me.

Try this link and perhaps search the whole site and it might help you.

    Here's Yahoo Pops:

I am getting the box this afternoon, so I will run through the cleaning and then post a HJT log. I will also look into the patch thing, but if it was from a previous version I bet it was included in the newer builds.

    thanks,

OK! Remember to not shut down after posting the log! And make sure you follow the guidelines in my post about HJT.

I started from the beginning again. The initial scans found a backdoor virus called csfb or something similar. They also found an instance of a start page hijack and removed both things. HsRemove found 14 items and removed them. After restart I ran HJT and attached is the log. Firefox now loads the MyYahoo stuff with no problems and Norton has stopped complaining about the sp.dll trojan horse so far. This however is what happened last time and 'it' keeps returning. I am hopeful this time though because I have talked the user into using Firefox, and as long as it loads her MyYahoo things all is good. Anyway, have a look at my log please and see what you think. I do not see anything left that concerns me. Oh yah, and that remindu thing is something the user uses.

    Thanks,

Ok, after several restarts and and one complete shutdown and reboot every thing seemed to be working except for hotmail. But, the user does not use hotmail, so all is good there. The log file also still looked clean. We will wait and see once it is in the user's hands to see what happens. I have talked them into using Firefox so that should help as well. :)

Thanks for the assist. You guys and gals are the greatest!

You're welcome. You really should complete the rest of the steps in the below link:

How to Protect yourself from malware!

The firewalls in there are much better than the built-in one of WinXP SP2. If you do use one of the firewalls mentioned (or any other for that matter) you must disable the one in WinXP SP2 or they can conflict with each other.

I have done those steps. The user already has Norton and they like it so that is what I left on there for firewall and anti-virus. I installed all the other stuff as well, so they should be set pretty well. Bestly (if that's a word), they have promised to use firefox instead of IE. :) We will wait and see I guess, it is back in their hands now.

Sounds good! But security starts with the user. None of those programs will protect the user from themselves. They must read what they are getting ready to click on and be careful what they approve and where they surf.

That is very true.. there have been sooo many times in the past that I did not read through things prior to clicking yes to install that program on my computer.
Which is what these people that insert all this malware, spyware, virus codes etc in installations want. The program contains a huge long list of reading agreements and the user will say to heck with all that reading and just click okay to install it and then the user is now unknowingly installing CRAP on their computer.
I learned this the hard way when I installed & used MessengerPlus3 and it installed a bunch of crap on my computer and if it wasn't for the MG website forum and chaslang I wouldn't have been able to get rid of the CRAP...
We just have to train ourselves to read before installing, to surf the net in a good habit, etc..
So many thanks to MG and all the people that donate their time on here for free to help others out. :)
