Firefox....Opera problem?

Hey...I am helping a friend out with his computer....and for some reason he can only use the internet throught internet explorer. Firefox and Opera both will not work, nor will IE work through any sort of proxy. I have checked the proxy settings of firefox and opera, and it is not set to run through one. I also tried to release/refresh the IP, and it does not seem to be working. Skype is working through the net, so it is definately working, but he can only browse through IE. Ideas??

 

Try updating to firefox 2 and the recent version of opera.

 

NO version of firefox works.....and I only just downloaded opera nd have the most recent version!

 

Just a stab in the dark but, you might check the firewall.

 

You know......I'm an idiot I did not even think of that. Talk about a brain slip. I will check it tonight....its a friends computer...and get back to you.

Yea that was basically the problem. BTW, my already strong distrust and dislike for Norton has gone to outright hatred. It was blocking pretty much EVERYTHING that tried to access the web....and when I would try to open the console it would just freeze up. Then I tried to uninstall it but it said you needed to open the consonle to do that....darn I couldn't do that. Long story short-I had to start the computer in safe mode to remove all of the files through the command prompt, and then went through and fixed registry values.....talk about the long way to uninstall!!! Anyway...the net is working fine now, and everything is just peachy!! Thanks for the help!!

 

Glad you solved the problem and all is well. Sorry to hear(read) that you had to do it the hard way. Norton's... uumm it didn't stay long here either. Hope you replaced it with something(s) good.
