   Since I installed Firefox 60.6.1 ESR it no longer checks the spelling.
   Check your spelling as you type is enabled.

   Apparently you need a dictionary installed. This is different from a language pack.

   I installed the dictionary and restarted Firefox - no luck.
   Then I re-installed Firefox - problem solved.
