Firefox won't open new links in same tab anymore

I recently updated FF to version 20.0 (XP machine).

The problem is that every time I click a link it opens a new tab. This is very annoying and it seems to happen every time I upgrade FF. It even opened a new tab when I clicked "Make New Thread" to post this here. You quickly end up with a dozen new tabs for things you don't want new tabs for.

I use Tab Mix Plus. I swear I've looked through all the FF and Tab Mix Plus options and have searched for web fixes for this with no luck. Lots of fixes to make a new tabs open, but not much to make FF open links in the same tabs.

"Firefox won't open new links in same tab anymore"

Try tools, options, tabs, open new windows in a new tab.

It's been set at 'Open new windows in Current Tab".

What I want it to do is Open new Links in the Current Tab

The thread was mis-titled.

In the past, when I wanted links to open in new tabs I'd just use the the context menu to do so.

The only thought I have atm is to disable Tab Mix Plus for a while and see if same thing happens? Sometimes, uninstalling and reinstalling an extension such as the above-mentioned may help. You're saying that the same problems happens with every Firefox update. How did you fix it before?

Well.....yep.

It was the tab mix plus. I disabled it and it works right now.

There must be some setting in there that I'm misinterpreting.

oma: I wish I knew how I fixed it in the past. Probably random button pushing.

I read a lot of complaints about the newer versions of FF but my last install was terrible so I just upgraded and it works pretty well....much better than the 3.6 I was using before.

(I'm going to try this Pale Moon browser which I've been reading about as a FF alternative. Will report back.)

Glad you found the culprit. So you updated Firefox from v 3.6 to the latest 20.0.1 version? If that's the case, I would uninstall Tab Mix Plus and reinstall their latest version. See if that would help? If fiddling with the buttons of TMP and you get it to work right, you may like to write down the changes just in case you may forget. Personally I've never used TMP so I won't be able to help you out with the settings in there.

Pale Moon is an optimized Firefox browser and virtually all Firefox's extensions work also in PM.

As you can see in my signature, I mainly use Firefox as my primary browser and Pale Moon as my backup of it with the very same extensions.

Oldish thread I know, but I found my way here by googling "firefox open links in same tab", so I thought I'd post anyway for anyone else having the same issue...

Using the advice above I disabled TabMixPlus and indeed that did fix the issue. But I'm a big fan of TMP so I had a closer look at the options... the setting you want is in the first options tab "Link", then at the bottom of that page, "Force to open in new tab:" - select "Nothing" from the dropdown menu and that should be it.

Fixed it for me anyway.
