I clicked on start and all of a sudden I saw two Firefox icons on desktop.
I removed one but now each time I switch from explorer to Firefox, I am prompted to choose about 5 questions before resuming Firefox. It is alla bout resttiong the browser.
Apparently I deleted the wrong icon because I used to just click on Firefox after being on explorer and it would just ask me if I wanted it to be my default browser.
How can I get that proper icon back?

    Delete your current shortcut

    Navigate to C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox

Right-click on "Firefox.exe" and choose "Send to" --> "Desktop (Create Shortcut)"

This should create a shortcut direct to the program and not to any reset wizards.

I have the icon for Firefox but when I switch between that and MSIE 8 which my wife uses, I am a box appears asking about 5 questions like resetting.
I took a chance and just checked the bottom box to use Firefox.
    Is this correct?
Why is this box suddenly appearing?
Should I use system restore because I would love to have it back like it was before but I don't know if this wold help?
    Thank you

What are the 5 options? We can't give you good help if we do not know what you see when you click the FF shortcut.

    This is hard to articulate.
On my laptop(which never experienced a sudden appearance of two FF icons), Start = I see Internet Mozilla Firefox on top and Internet Explorer beneath it -in safe mode.
If I click on the explorer it asks to be the default browser and I yes it.
For the sake of argument I close it.
Explorer is on top and FF is beneath it BUT NOT IN SAFE MODE.

When I do the above with the desktop, FF goes into safe mode.
I think I deleted a shortcut not the real icon when the two were present-maybe.
    ------------------
Now, since I have been experimenting, I cannot get those questions to surface and the browsers seem to be behaving which is good but leaves me with egg on my face.
I really am sorry to have raised another issue but the two machines gave two different answers after the appearance of the two icons.
Let's hope the browsers stabilize and this is the end of it .
Thank you for listening and again I apologize for the interference.

Where do you see this? On the desktop, in the program listing of all programs or in the left pane where most frequently used programs are listed?
I still am trying to picture exactly where you see these two browsers. (It may be solved for now but if it comes back, at least we will have a clearer understanding of what you see and might be able to correct it so it does not happen again).

I'm assuming it is the default programs when one clicks the START button on the desktop. The answer I would have used, is "don't ask again" about default web browser.

    Hello plodr
When you look at your desktop, you usually see start and at the least a recycle bin.
When I click on start I see my two browsers and M.S. Office Word.
When I used explorer then switched to F.F., that dialogue box appeared asking me to?reset password etc. It was, I think, a legitimate way of configuring the browser and I believe it was occurring because I was clicking a shortcut instead of the default browser.
I did a lot of searching as to how to replace the original icon etc, and something I did pushed the right button -luckily.
Now I can switch back and forth between the two and I am asked if I would like to have either as the default or not.
I did learn a trick at Mozilla headquarters that if the box appears you should click on rest the passwords and it will allow you to proceed under ?normal circumstances.
I hope I have drawn a better illustration for you and again I thank you for your interest.

Quite true. Just have IE be the default browser, and when FF complains that it isn't the default, just check the box to not ask me anymore, and click no for default.

Or get the wife to switch to FF.:-D

Better yet, give her her own user account and there will be no issues. ;)

Actually, now that MSIE 8 is not supported of today, along with the introduction of MSIE 9, I have persuaded her not to use an unsafe browser.
We are all with F.F. now because we have xp. Only Vista and up can get MSIE9 if they wish.

Left pane? If so, that is merely the listing of the most recently used programs. If you click All Programs at the bottom of the left pane, you should see Mozilla Firefox listed. When you click that, you get two choices: Mozilla Firefox and Mozilla Firefox (Safe Mode).
When you select the Safe Mode that is when you get a box with 5 choices. I suspect instead of using your usual Firefox account, you inadvertently selected the Safe Mode one. The next thing that happened is that this FF icon appeared in the left pane listed with the most recently used programs. You would then see two FF icons, your normal one and the safe mode one. They look exactly the same. Maybe that's why you saw two FF icons in the left pane listing of the most frequently used programs.

Also note: you can not remove any icons from this pane. Eventually an icon will be replaced if you open a lot of other programs.

You are a skilled investigator. I too like to get 'the answer' to questions but am not nearly as adept.
It is interesting to note that, "you can not remove any icons from this pane. Eventually an icon will be replaced if you open a lot of other programs."
Your explanation made sense and will go in my folder of issues learned and resolved.
    Thank you

Where does this non-sense come from? IE 9 hasn't even been officially released yet. And, IE 8 will probably be supported for quite some time yet and it is not an unsafe browser.

Correction to a statement I made.
    Totally wrong on my part!
I fired up my XP Home computer that I haven't tweaked. ;)
    1. Open Control Panel and Click on Taskbar and Start Menu
    2. Click on the Start Menu tab
    3. Aside of Start menu there is a Customize button; click this
    4. In the section titled Programs, you can click Clear List.
For me, everything disappeared except for FF which I have checked/ticked because I want my Internet Browser to appear on this most recently used menu. (It is below programs, in the section title Show on Start Menu). If I remove that check/tick my left pane would then be completely blank. Just something to note in case a shortcut goes bad and you do want to remove it from the left pane so you do not accidentally click on it.

Then as soon as a program becomes a 'most recently used one' it would reappear in the section you refer to.
This is good news;I don't know how you found it but now I can easily remove an icon like the one that troubled me before.
Thank you for the research. I am sure many readers will benefit from it.
