Firefox's WOT add-on, trustworthy?

Is WOT spyware (despite that it is loaded intentionally)?

Should I trust it? I've read WOT's security policy, and it claims it will honor its policy not to provide private data (like surfing habits) to third parties, unless (and here's the kicker), unless it is to comply with a law or regulation. In other words, if subpoenaed, WOT will turn over your private surfing data.

I fully expect some WOT corporate rep to respond using the royal "we," reminding us that WOT "remains committed" to this or that policy, and generally demonstrating his or her mastery of the mid-level, managerial corporate jargon.

    Is WOT trustworthy?

    Greetings, Glamis77...

Having never heard of WOT, I just browsed the 437 reviews at the Mozilla site, and it seems that the pros/cons are about 50/50...as far as 'trustworthy', I doubt that Mozilla would intentionally post an add-on that's dangerous...

In my opinion, though, there's enough controversy for me to stay away from it...

    WOT is not spyware.

As far as private data being turned over if they are subpoenaed? All companies must comply with that. It's the law. They are just letting you know.

I use WOT religiously before clicking on a link taking me to somewhere I've never been. So far, it has been very good. It is definitely trustworthy. Is it 100% accurate? Nothing like that is. You need to combine any tool with common sense.

It does not have any impact on performance of your computer, so I would suggest you give it a try. If you don't like it or don't find it of use, just uninstall it.

Just to be clear, WOT is not a blocking tool, so all it will do is give you some insight on the sites out there and whether or not you should visit.

One of the definitions of the word 'controversy' is 'a dispute where there is strong disagreement', and that is clearly what is present in the Mozilla forums - whether the discussions are warranted or not remains to be seen...

I am an adult, and and I'm certainly not going to depend on a browser add-on to dictate to me what sites are 'safe' or 'not safe'...as far as the disclaimer about providing private data, I'm sure every product's EULA since the abacus has claimed it will honor its privacy policies, but we all know that's not necessarily true...

    And that's my opinion...;)

It's safe. You can check the Scorecard ;) http://www.mywot.com/en/scorecard/mywot.com

With any online service there are those who try to and sometimes do abuse the system. That's where WOT is better than most. The members or staff usually find such users and/or ratings fairly fast and correct the issue ASAP. Other site rating services can take months to investigate and correct a false rating.

    Hello Everyone,

I have been using WOT add-on with mozilla firefox and it's never let me down and I do trust it, it tells me some of the sites come up in red and some are trustworthy like this site.

    Give it a try.
