    hello

i have sygate personal firewall professional always running and updated in windows 98 se... everything patched and two ethernet cards, one connects to the internet the other connects to the other computer.
i am sharing all my drives with full access...
firewall configured to allow only netbios to the network card and not the card that connects to the internet.
but sometimes when one of the computers is turned off when i try to shutdown the other, it tells me that one or two users are connected...
    what do you think?

    bye

Humm... I think its a windows issue, or the firewall could not be allowing the termination of the connection packets through.... who knows.

    hello

my firewall was not runing... it just shutdown
i need a better solution for my two windows 98 se. wich is single user, with all updates and running the last version of "sygate personal firewall pro" (wich i think i have to change because it messes with mirc when i run a fileserver, and that is why my firewall shutedown i think.)

i was sharing with full access all the harddrives and all cd-roms.

what i have in network options is:

    client for microsoft networks
f5d500 pci card network pci card...
    micronet sp200r fast etheernet adapter
    ipx/spx-compaticle protocol - f5d5000, pci...
tcp/ip - f5d5000, pci card network pci card...
tcp/ip micronet sp2500 fast ethernet adapter
file and printer sharing for microsoft networks

    primary network login: wndows logon
    access control: share-level access control

the other computer as the same but a difrent ethernet card to connect to the internet.
the f5d5000 in both computers connects the two computers, no hub. the other pci card connects to difrent cable modems.

the only thing that i want to be able to do is:
    - share files and folders in both computers
    - play lan games, also old ones wich need ipx
(thats why i installed "ipx/spx... protocol"

but i think this is not secure... i know that i can disable netbios (wich is used to share the files, i think) since i have two pci cards it would be good if i could disable netbios in the internet card, that would make the system secure, right? but microsoft windows does not allow me to disable, is it because of the bindings?

there are some guides that work with netbuie... but maybe that wont work for me, maybe that solution is for computers with only one nic.

can you give me the best solution please?
    thank you

    bye

Learn to use some CaPiTaL LeTtErS so that its not so tedious to read, and then like I said, upgrade to XP, lose windows 98. Your approaching the limits of WIndows 98.

    hello

please do not replay to my posts if you can not help me and if you want to say things wich i do not want to use, do not tell me to go waste lots of money buying something wich i do not like.
and do not dare telling me to use another operating system, a free one, i already have slackware.
    thank you.

You asked and people replied. Now you want to make rules for the answers you receive.

I use a Router and its firewall capabilities plus ZA just for monitoring outgoing traffic.....

What I would suggest is download and read the manual for SPFpro it has information on setting up Advanced Rules for networks http://smb.sygate.com/support/documents/pspf/default.htm as its your network and as each users network is different and as such setups will differ.

plus have you tested your firewall at one of these sites

what kind of connection do you have, if you're on a brodband connection then I suggest purchasing an inexpensive router (d-link 604 can be had for USD50) that would take care of all your problems. If that is not an option then I would suggest getting some proxy software other then using ICS. ICS was a stopgap measure on microsofts part, it works, but is completely non configurable.

sygate makes a perfect piece of software, it's a tru proxy, this would effectively seperate your internet connection from your network as you want.

If neither of those options appeals and you want to work with what you have then it gets complicated.
Win 98 networking was never really intended to let you bind and unbind things in the manner you want, it throws the whole network stack into a tizzy. You're on the right track though. Probably the best solution would be the advanced rules as Halo suggested. They can be applied to different connections. I would also switch from share level control to user level control. This would mean that an intruder would have to know your username/password to login easily. Just make the user name and password the same on each machine in your netowrk login, a pain yes, but it's just one step to login.

one more option, since you have slackware and seem familiar with it then you could dig up a 486 or something and boot a proxy machine from a floppy, there are a lot of distros you can download and they are preconfigured. I'm sure you know where to look.

Actually nice option FW... I didnt think of that at the time and as a cheap 486 is reletively easy to come by it makes an excellent firewall box.
