firewall question?

    We have cable internet (knology) with Belkin router serving 3 PC's. We run XP SP2 on all 3. On the PC in question (my son's) -- he plays online roleplaying games & hosts a few, in which he "forwards" ports on the router. His is the only computer that continues to get spyware (critical on Ad-Aware) & trojans (on AVG) on a consistent basis. I may need to run all on the "sticky thread" & post a "hijack this" again (which I have done before)? -- but my main question is what type of firewall do I need to install/run on his PC? Currently the XP firewall & the router firewall are what he has (I'm unsure if "forwarding" ports to play games bypasses the router firewall?) In the past, I used ZoneAlarm, but removed it after my ISP recommended not using any software firewalls. This was against my better judgement, as I know next to nothing about router firewalls, and we are online constantly with our cable modem. I should have asked you all first, as our PC's run in top shape because of much help from majorgeeks! This issue seems overly complicated to me. Could you tell me where to start again & give firewall/anti-spyware suggestions? Thanks so much, Shannon

    The more ports you have open, the greater number of possible security issues you can have. Perhaps this is even one of the reasons his PC keeps getting infected. (Other reasons are probably due to where he surfs).

    Yes you should have a software firewall especially since you have multiple PCs on your home network. See: How to Protect yourself from malware! It contains a many things including a few firewall applications.
