Hello everyone. Just got new computer. It has Nortin internet security. If I turn off its firewall can I use zonealarm. I dont think I can uninstall just the firewall.

    Hi Jerry!

Not Norton! You know how we feel about that! ;)

Will it work? Probably. Is it a good idea to not use one of the items integrated into a Security Suite and replace with a competitors? Maybe not.

If you are going to really use the Symantec software, you may be better off using the firewall too. It would probably be more costly to system resources to add ZoneAlarm in on top of what Symantec would already have installed.

Hi Chas, thx. How is your summer going? Yah it came with Norton - oh well. Actually would have preferred just the anti virus and use zone alarm as the firewall. I cant seem to program it to have me decide whether a program can connect. Seems to be letting all of them. I turned off the learning phase. Arrghhhhh. Also every 2 minutes the mouse pointer turns to an hourglass for 1-2 seconds and then back to the mouse pointer again - like clockwork. Driving me nuts. I have tried blocking all traffic figuring that would stop whatever from reaching internet for update or whatever it is doing. Any thoughts on that or how might figure out what it is. Thx again.

You could run ProcessExplorer and watch which processes are running and using CPU time.

Our you saying you got a new PC and it came with Norton? Normally this is just trialware to reel you in. Like 90 day trials or similar. I bought a laptop back in January and it came with a 90 day trial of McAfee Internet Security. It was the 3rd thing I uninstalled. The first was AOL and the second was BigFix. Are you guessing where I'm heading?

Summer is going good! How about yours?

I had these old links on Norton. Perhaps they would be of some help. I cannot help you with their settings since I have never seen them because I will not use this software.

Actually even tho its supposed to be a 15 month subscription it shows expiring in 345 days. I have looked at the links a little, may be different version than mine. I tried unchecking all files in start, run, msconfig, startup. I believe it is Norton doing it because it didnt do it until rechecked norton. If I just delete Norton which anti virus would u recommend personally. I would use zone alarm for the firewall. OK? Thanks for the links.

Any of the three mentioned in How to Protect yourself from malware! should work just fine. I use ZA myself and like it.
