Firewalls.

Free firewalls are as scarce as hen's teeth. Fortunately, Windows Firewall has improved over the years. If you use a paid for Internet Security suite, a firewall will be included. But what about the millions of users of free Antivirus / Antimalware software? Do you rely on Windows Firewall or use a third-party firewall?

I have only used Windows own firewall on every pc I've had. I had also always used the default settings until ...
Windows 8.1....
I wound up using it to stop Windows from updating all the live tiles for products I never use, which was almost all of them. Also used it to block most all of the background communications to MS and their 3rd party data friends.

One other setting I started using was to block 'remote firewall administration'. When I saw this setting, I thought "It's a no brainer".

I have tended in past 8yrs+ to go with Windows Firewall, basically more so since Windows 7 onwards ( I agree its gotten better in Win10 its not the best graphically to navigate or edit unless you used to GPEDIT console type options, but its fairly powerful and out of the box its good), plus these days many Routers have good security built in also to supliment a sofware firewall, then its in part other security as in anti-virus/malware and how you surf also.
