First IE then firefox

About four months ago, IE 9 had been acting finicky, it wouldn't close, when it did, my desktop icons would not function. I could go to task manager to close two incidents of Iexplore and regain function. I tried to go through steps to get rid of the Iexplore virus but no success.

I started using FireFox 17 and and within the last three days, firefox started acting up. When I first opened Firefox I get a pop up window which reflects the web page that I was going to, (homepage or if I've been cycling Firefox, whatever the page was that I was going to. It's not the same page it looks like the original but asks for a survey. I close this and firefox works fine. When I close firefox, I again have issues with the desktop Icons which clear up over time. I also have a secondary popup window that come up with an ad on the lower right corner.

I ran the prescribed protocols from the Malware removal page and resisted the temptation to delete the trojan found because you're kind of direct in not doing that , so here I am attaching my files.

    Hello, keeferj2

I also need the RKreport[1].txt produced from running RogueKiller.

http://imageshack.us/a/img841/7292/thisisujrt.gif Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
    • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
    • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista or Seven, right-mouse click it and select Run as Administrator.
    • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
    • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
    • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.

Attach both JRT.txt and RKreport[1].txt to your next message.

I've completed the Junk Removal and attached a file. I don't have a file for the RogueKiller. I know I ran it because I have an RK Quarantine folder. Inside the folder is only a EULA.txt file. I can run it again if needed but thought I'd ask first.

Yes - please run RogueKiller again.
Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista or Windows7)

Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file and the RKreport.txt to your next reply.

    * How is your machine running?

The pop ups still appear but less frequently. The desktop icon seem to remain active. We're moving in the right direction. Thanks.

Before we begin, please run "MSconfig" and put your PC into normal startup mode

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Please re-scan with Hitman Pro and have it delete everything under the headings of
    • Potential Unwanted Programs
    • Malware remnants
    ...ignore any other findings.
    Afterwards, click the Next button.
HitmanPro may want to reboot the PC in order for the changes to take affect, please do so.

Now download AdwCleaner and save it to your Desktop.
    • Double-click AdwCleaner.exe to run it. (Vista & Win7 users should right-click and "Run As Administrator")
    • Click on Delete
    • Your pc should now automatically re-boot
    • AdwCleaner will display a log showing the files, folders, and registry entries that were removed.
    • Attach this log to your next reply.
Please look in Add/Remove Programs (Programs and Features if using Vista or Windows 7) for the following and uninstall if found. If you get any errors just make a note and continue on.
Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Please download OTM by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.
    • Right-click OTM.exe and select Run as administrator to run it.
    • Copy the lines from the below codebox to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C
(or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy): Do not include the word Code: which is just a title line of the code box
    Code:
    :Processes
    explorer.exe
    :Reg
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670}]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{26D675AC-D925-4bbf-A720-62C2AA4A81EB}]
    :Commands
    [purity]
    [EMPTYFLASH]
    [EmptyTemp]
    [start explorer]
    [Reboot]
    • Return to OTM, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow barand choose Paste.
    • Now click the large http://forums.majorgeeks.com/chaslang/images/MoveIt%21.png button.
    • If OTM asks to reboot your computer, allow it to do so. The report should appear in Notepad after the reboot.
    • Close OTM.
Now navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder ( assuming your Windows drive is C). This is where your log will be
saved in the form of Date and Time mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log. Just look for the most recent .log file. Attach
this log file to your next message.

Now install the latest Sun Java Runtime Environment

Then run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Windows 7, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

Please attach the below logs to your next reply:
    • AdwCleaner[S1].txt
    • C:\_OTM\MovedFiles mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log
    • C:\MGlogs.zip

    How is your pc running?

Completed. The Hitman was a bit of a bugger. It gave what appeared to be the BSOD at the reboot but restarted with no issues so I'm assuming it went well.

I didn't see the O2 BHO RivalGaming in the window for "analyses". Not sure what that meant.

I'm attaching the files as requested.

I've not changed the MSconfig or any of the other things (UAC etc).

The computer seems to be running well. I've not had a pop up at all (knocking on wood).

Looking good - Just a little more trash to remove:

Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. (Do not include any space above the word "REGEDIT4")Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" . Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me whether or not you receive a success message about adding the above to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

    * If successful and you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. It provides no "real-time" protection unless you purchase it and does not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and re-enable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    3. Delete RogueKiller, HitManPro and any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you download.
    4. If running Vista or Win 7, it is time to make sure you have re-enabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be
      added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    7. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    8. After doing the above, you should work through the below link:

Whooo Hooo! Got the successful message. Then was able to finish the process. The only thing that was different was that Hijack was not in the Listing to have it uninstall in Control Panel. I moved on with the rest of the steps.

Firefox and IE seem to be working great. No popups. When I close the applications they close completely and efficiently. I don't see any trace of the issues that I was having before.

Thank you for your assistance and patience.

We didn't change the MSConfig back. Is that something that we need to do?

I pushed the computer pretty hard last night and it never faltered. I'm not certain what would be the difference between "normal startup" versus "selective startup".

    Thanks again.

    You're welcome!
MSconfig should NOT be used as a long-term solution for managing startup processes. It should be used as a trouble-shooting aid only. The following link lists various problems that can develop from improper usage and recommended software suggestions better suited as "Startup Managers".

    Dealing with Startup Processes

I'm glad that your pc is performing well... and is able to keep up with you again. ;)
