    Hi,

This is my first post so will start from beginning -

PC had been running steadily slower for last 2/3 weeks and then Monday morning, once PC booted, had a Norton pop-up about a Trojan needing to be manually resolved. Clicked on pop-up box to resolve and PC crashed/froze. Checked my ipconfig and my IP address etc had become null. Did a renew, still didn't work. Task Manager has also been disabled. Has not run properly since.

Did the READ ME then went through the MALWARE/ CLEANSE XP steps. PC would only run in safe mode but still incredibly slow and still freezes occassionally.

Since I had no network connection and PC wouldn't recognise flash drive, had to run the steps off a disk drive....

    Ran SAS.

Tried to run MBAM, got runtime errors (0) and (440) then a regsvr32.exe unable to locate component error msg - this application has failed to start because MSVBVM60.DLL was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem. Another window, same again but this time ATL.DLL was not found. Followed these instructions and MBAM still not working. So moved onto the next step.

Ran ComboFix overnight - regained my network connection.

    Ran RootRepeal

    Ran MGTools

(One of these gave me a rootkit zero access malware notice - can't remember which one I'm afraid - sorry.)

Then asked me to reboot which I did however now I only have a network connection on safe mode again.

Having followed all the steps and browsed thru other threads I thought may be relevant and with it still not working, I am out of ideas and need some help pretty please....

My router can still see that I am connected and but my PC does not :(

I am running XP Sp3 and IE8 with Symantec for AV if this info helps at all.

Lots of thank you's in advance

Hi and welcome to Major Geeks, sfoliver!

Please uninstall Norton 360. You can reinstall it when we are finished removing malware.

    Also uninstall this: Java(TM) 6 Update 17

http://img823.imageshack.us/img823/2039/msnmsg.gif Please download Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to your desktop.
    • Double-click MessengerDisable.exe to run it.
    • Place checkmarks in "Uninstall Windows Messenger" and "Hide Messenger from Outlook Express"
    • Click Apply
    • Click Exit

http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/3557/tdsskiller.gif I want you to read and follow these instructions: TDSSKiller - How to run

http://img707.imageshack.us/img707/6703/generalxpicon.gif Please download MBRCheck by clicking here and save it to your desktop.

    • Double-click on the file to run it. (Vista/7 right-click and select Run as Administrator)

Make sure that ComboFix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your desktop -- but do not run it.
If it is not on your desktop, the below will not work.
Shut down your protection software now (antivirus, antispyware...etc) to avoid possible conflicts.
Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into Notepad:
    Code:
    [COLOR="DarkRed"]KillAll::[/COLOR]
    [COLOR="DarkRed"]ClearJavaCache::[/COLOR]
    [COLOR="DarkRed"]Domains::[/COLOR]
    [COLOR="DarkRed"]File::[/COLOR]

Save this file as CFScript.txt to your desktop. So now you should have both CFScript.txt and ComboFix.exe on your desktop.
Now use your mouse to drag CFScript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe and then release.
    http://softvisia.com/users/Night_Raven/Security/cfsdnd2.gif
    This will launch ComboFix.
Note: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
Allow ComboFix to update itself if prompted.
When ComboFix finishes, a log will be produced at C:\ComboFix.txt
Attach this log to your next message. (How to attach)

http://img195.imageshack.us/img195/9049/javaz.gif Now install the current version of Sun Java from: jre-7u2-windows-i586.exe

http://img406.imageshack.us/img406/3189/windowsrepair.gif Download Windows Repair by Tweaking.com and unzip the contents into a newly created folder on your desktop.
    • Now open Repair_Windows.exe
    • Go to Start Repairs tab.
    • Choose "Custom Mode" and press "Start".
    • Create a System Restore point if prompted.
    • In the Custom Mode window, select the following repair options:
      • Register System Files
      • Repair WMI
      • Repair Internet Explorer
      • Repair Hosts File
      • Remove Policies Set By Infections
      • Repair Winsock & DNS Cache
      • Repair Proxy Settings
      • Repair Windows Updates
      • Set Windows Services To Default Startup
    • Now click the Start button.
    • Be patient while the tool repairs the selected items.
    • If asked to reboot the computer for the changes to take affect, make sure other tasks in the program are not still running before accepting to restart.

    http://img254.imageshack.us/img254/945/baticonxp.gif Now run C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat by double-clicking it.
This updates all of the logs inside MGlogs.zip.
When it is finished, attach C:\MGlogs.zip to your next message. (How to attach)

    Hi thisisu,

    I think I spoke too soon :(

XP now seems to be having a problem connecting to the web via a browser (tried IE8 and Chrome) which makes me think network problem but my outlook is receiving my mail!! Weird...Checked my ipconfig and did a renew and release. That didn't work. Norton AV keeps trying to update itself and gives me a network connection error msg. Task manager, Windows firewall and flash drives are also still disabled/ refusing to work and only just noticed but incredibly bizarre - combofix.exe icon and CFScript.txt have disappeared from the desktop and I did not uninstall or remove them!!!

Which scan should I run as SAS and MBAM refusing to run as well...

    Help me please!!!

    Thank you

Can you give me some more details on what exactly happens you attempt to run a scan with SAS and MBAM?

    Try completing the below too:

http://img600.imageshack.us/img600/2693/mgtools.gif Now download the latest MGtools.exe to the root of your c: drive.
    • Replace your existing MGtools.exe with this one.
    • Now run this new MGtools.exe by double-clicking it. (Vista/7 right-click and select Run as Administrator)
    • When it is finished, attach c:\MGlogs.zip to your next message. (How to attach)

    Hello,

I uninstalled and reinstalled SAS - this now works and is returning a clean scan report.
Uninstalled MBAM and reinstalled but still giving me the same runtime errors and regsvr32 error msgs as per my first post.
Ran MGTools and am attaching log.
System seems to be behaving again, do not understand it's weird blip of not working/ running properly these past 4 days...

If these logs are also clean, could you run me through the final cleanup steps pretty please?

    Many thanks thisisu

These logs are clean. You're welcome :)

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis if it present
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work through the below link:
Take care and be safe! :)
