I have some major browser highjacking problem, a virus or something. I am not sure. I get pop up advertisements from all kinds of things constantly. I notice things like Smitfraud-C.CoreService, outerinfo, virtumonde, among others. I have tried removing these things every way I know how but they keep coming back.

This is my first time trying this forum so I hope I am doing it right.
I have read and followed all the steps in your "READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support" section. First off, I wasn't able to boot into safe mode with my internet modem unplugged. So with the modem plugged in, I ran Ccleaner, Spybot Search & Destroy, and Counterspy in safe mode. Then I ran Bitdefender's Online Antivirus Scan and Panda Active Scan in safe mode with network support.
I also ran GetRunKey, ShowNew, and Hijackthis. I have all the logs from the scans - should I attach them to a posting. Please advise. Thank you.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

You have a bunch of problems and we will need to run a couple other tools to help us remove some problems which will make further manual cleaning steps (which we will do later) much easier and shorter.

Run this Virtumonde aka Trojan Vundo Removal and do not attach the requested log right away. Run it multiple times until it comes up clean and then attach the final log later when I ask for it.

    1. Download this file - combofix.exe
    2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
    3. When finished, it will produce a log for you. Attach this log to your next reply
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Now attach the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.

    1. VundoFix
    2. ComboFix
    3. GetRunKey
    4. ShowNew
    5. HJT
After seeing the above logs, I will then create a removal procedure for anything that remains.

Things seem to be working. I can already see the difference in my computer.
    Thanks!

Your Windows OS version is way out of date and is a major security risk. And to make things even worse, you are running without any protection. No antivirus, no firewall, and not realtime antispyware blocking tools. After we finish, you must follow all of my final instructions which will include a step to get Windows Updates and to get proper protection installed. If you do not follow those steps, you will always be infected.

Uninstall the CounterSpy trial now since we are finished with it

Run HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)

    O20 - AppInit_DLLs:

NOTE: HJT may popup an error about the AppInit_DLLs line. Ignore it and click OK to continue.

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    • Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:
    • Now click the 'Done' button.
    • Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    • You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt
    Now run Ccleaner!

Now attach the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.

    1. Avenger
    2. GetRunKey
    3. ShowNew
    4. HJT

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 8 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

    You still have several infections.

First goto Add/Remove programs and uninstall Outerinfo. Even if it does not uninstall, just continue on with the below steps but tell me later if you had a problem.

Now let's remove a malware service related to Boonty Games!

    • Click on Start, then Run ... type services.msc into the box that opens up, and press 'OK'.
    • On the page that opens, scroll down to Boonty Games
    • then right click the entry, select Properties and press Stop Service.
    • When it shows that it is stopped, next please set the Start-up Type to 'Disabled'.
    • Click OK until you get back to Windows.
    • Next, run HJT, but instead of scanning, click on the None of the above, just start the program button at the bottom of the choices.
    • At the lower right, click on the Config button
    • Then click the Misc tools button
    • Select Delete an NT Service
    • Copy/pasteBoonty Games into the box that opens, and press OK
    • If you receive any error messages just ignore them and continue.
    • Now exit HJT but do not reboot when it tells you it needs to. We will do that further down after running HJT again to fix some other items.
Run HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {2E9D4C81-9F27-4c14-B804-7B0F6BC88A4F} - D:\Program Files\Outerinfo\Outerinfo.dll
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NI.UWAS7_0001_N91M2703] "D:\DOCUME~1\Uzer5\LOCALS~1\Temp\WinAntiSpyware2007FreeInstall.exe" -nag
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Outerinfo] "D:\Program Files\Outerinfo\Outerinfo.exe"
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [OuterinfoUpdate] "D:\Program Files\Outerinfo\OuterinfoUpdate.exe"

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it
double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now let's use Avenger again to remove some more files and folders.

I followed all the steps and the only things that were a little different is that the BOONTY GAMES service already had been stopped without me having to click on "stop' and also when I ran the HJT program, clicking "None of the above, just start the program", - I did not find the last 2 lines about Outerinfo. I fixed the other 2 lines which were there.

    Here are the requested logs..

Your logs are clean. If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps. Complete these ASAP (especially the How to protect yourself link).
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix, you can delete the ComboFix.exe file, C:\ComboFix folder, C:\QooBox folder, and the C:\combofix.txt log that was created.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    5. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    6. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    7. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    8. You can delete the ShowNew.Zip and GetRunkey.Zip files and the files that you extracted from the ZIP files. You can also delete the C:\newfiles.txt and C:\runkeys.txt logs that were created
    9. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • go back to step 8 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

I realize how important updating windows is but I cannot find my COA number for my copy of windows and when I try to update my computer it says my copy of windows cannot be validated. I used to be able to run windows update without any problems. I don't know what has happen to change this. I will move on to the other steps for protecting myself, though. Thank you for all your help.

You may want to discuss this with Microsoft and/or also post a message in the Software Forum on it. There are many reasons why Windows Update can fail however if they are saying your system cannot be validated, it is not even attempting to do an update since it believes your OS is not legit. You really need to get yours updated or you are going to remain at a very high risk level for even more sever problems.

    You're welcome. Surf safely.
