I have a PC with XP Pro X64. It was running very slowly, so I did a reboot but it wouldn't get past the XP screen/ I read on some post that you could remove the hard drive and connect it to another XP computer and reset the system restore, but no details, of course. I did this, got to system restore, but can't figure out either the dates or how to do it. There are a lot of folders containing things like "snapshot" but I am stuck at that point. I went back and went to windows on the new PC, which has a new OS XP Pro X64 install on it, but when I tried to copy this I quickly got a message that a program called JETC9D7 was running and to shut it down and try again. I tried to find this program but couldn't. When I Googled it I got some post claiming it was a virus or malware in the temp folder, but "search" wouldn't find it. I tired on both "C" drives including the one out of the unbootable PC. I went into temp files and found several JET entries and deleted them. I then tried to reboot - I put the hard drive back in the first PC, but though it now "scrolled" my LCD showed "out of frequency" and showed nothing. I then took out the HDD and rehooked it to the new PC and am running Avast Pro, SuperAntiSpyware free, and Malwarebytes antimalware free, but although Malwarebytes shows one tracking cookie, the others show nothing. I would like to reset the system restore on the HDD I removed but can't do it. Can anyone help please?

    Welcome to the forum drrossh.

The first thing I would suggest is putting the HDD back in the original computer, boot the Window install CD and hit R to enter the recovery console, select the partition that Windows is on and then run "chkdsk /R" without the quotes. Depending on the size and condition of the drive it could take from 20 minutes to several hours to complete.

When it's done, try booting the computer.

Anyone know how to use system restore with HDD out?

I don't think it is possible to do that as it must be run on the OS on the hard drive, not the OS on another PC that the drive is connected to. Your best bet for now is to follow the advice of shnerdly and run a CHKDSK /r (note the space before the / but none after it)

The original PC and OS won't allow him to get to the point of anything with the original install disk or even others

So he cannot boot from CD? This sounds like a hardware failure to me.
