So, I'm assuming that a right-click in a blank area of Control Panel > View > Icons doesn't work? Mine is to default to Icons. If I change it, and close Control Panel, and then re-open it, it stays at whatever my last choice was (Thumbnails, Details, whatever). I'm gonna do a bit of research and see if there is indeed a registry setting for this... I'll post in a day or so and tell ya what I find out (if anything).....

dave, thanks for your reply. I am trying to achieve 2 different permanent settings.
All Folders to open up in Details view, except Control Panel that I want in Icons view.

Check out the 2 links I posted for a background.

I have added Date Created and Comments fields to my Details view as I load Comments against many files, especially downloads, as an aide-de-memoiré. Bazza

I have a possible idea to a fix, if you have been having much issues with Icons etc

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q132668/

    Usual backup warnings apply!

On your other questions from the other links:

    1. dunno as yet as the normal View and Icons option in a folder should have worked, but the fix could be above.

2 & 3. Yes but as you have found out it needs you to change the Folder Customizations ( BagMRU Size ) to a higher number than XPs default, I have mine set to 40000, yes high but I have a tidyish 3 HDs full of various files and I like different customizations for various folders and data... I know that if your in a Network enviroment using Roaming Profiles increasing this can possible slightly slow down a PC, but on a stand alone PC, I have not seen any ill effects with mine, its still zippy quick.

Thanks Halo, you are a welcome continuing source of admiration, inspiration, perspiration and information.:D lol. ;)

I have printed out your link and will give it a go.

It really is only a minor annoyance as I use Control Panel fairly rarely, but I would like to fix it once and for always. Bazza

    @Halo@,

Tried that MS link. Tried many permutations of it.
But still can't get Control Panel to open up in ICONS view.
I give up and admit defeat.:p Bazza

To change the main ones in 'Category View' you have to edit the shell32.dll...this is fairly easy if you know how to edit the dll's with ResHacker. If you use the 'Classic View' you have to edit the .cpl files that correspond to the entries you have in the classic view control panel.

EDIT: Here's some of the .cpl files you need to edit to change the icons in the "Classic View" control panel...you'll find these in the Windows/System32 folder:

    Access.cpl
    Appwiz.cpl
    Desk.cpl
    Hdwwiz.cpl
    Inet.cpl
    Intl.cpl
    Joy.cpl
    Main.cpl
    Mlcfg32.cpl
    Mmsys.cpl
    Ncpa.cpl
    Nusrmgr.cpl
    Plugincpl131.cpl
    Powercfg.cpl
    QuickTime.cpl
    S32lucp1.cpl
    Sapi.cpl
    Sysdm.cpl
    Telephon.cpl
    Timedate.cpl

so basically you find the icon group and the icon you want to change then you right click select replace resource find the icon select it then save your changes. Then you just replace it like you would any other system file.

Just out of curiosity or another question really, but have you changed the default font or size used on menus ( would have been in Display Properties > Appearance > Advanced and click a menu bar and is the Font Trebuchet MS size 8 ) at all?

Thanks, TimW, for your detailed reply. I am not sure if I understand all that you have explained. Maybe the cure is worse than the problem. I only have 1 screen (Control Panel) that I don't like the view. All the others open up how I want them. I am a bit scared of stuffing up more than I fix, but will print out your reply and mull over it.

@Halo@ Font is Tahoma in 8 point. Bazza

Size 8 font is fine, if it was smaller it may cause icon view issues, due to size.. but your OK.

XP Home or Pro Bazza? ( I should know but I forget stuff ) only wondering as Group Policies may have a setting to cover the Folder Views.

I know where TimW is leading with that info, but I'll leave him to explain that lot...

edit to change the icons in the "Classic View" control panel....find the icon you want to change in the sys/32 folder and then do the "right click select replace resource find the icon select it then save your changes" ....

Maybe I should do this ....been a while ....lol.

    XP Pro, Halo.
I should have mentioned this all along, but didn't think it would be relevant.
@TimW@, thanks again. More to consider. :D Bazza

TimW, I don't want to change the icons in Control Panel. I just want to change the way that Control Panel is displayed (in ICONS view, not DETAILS view).

I hope I have not confused your reply. Bazza

Hey Baz ...you didn't install windows optimizer by any chance?

  20. bigbazza

    bigbazza R.I.P. 14/12/2011 - Good Onya Geek

Pretty sure I haven't. Is it called Windows Optimizer or something else?
Have you a link, not that I want to try it, just to check it out.

My XP Pro is much modified and tweaked so undoubtably something is conflicting with something else. Bazza

PS: As iI mentioned, don't spend time on it. It is only 1 screen that doesn't open the way I want. I wonder if it is the fact that I have added 2 columns to the default display in View (details)? Baz
