Fixing My Brother's Computer

    Hello!

My brother's computer is, well, a bit of a mess. He just goes everywhere and doesn't really take that great of care of it. So I stepped in to clean it.

So I ran the read and run me first steps and got to Step 4. After running it all, the popups appear to have gone away. But Hitman found a LOT of things, there's still some of that "highlighted text" thing in browsers that leads to ads, and the computer's still a bit too slow for my liking. So I'm posting here in hopes that you guys can help me get this computer clean.

I've attached all logs below except the Hitman log which was too big to attach here. I will make another post below with that log, I apologize for the double post.

Thank you so much for all your help, and please let me know if I do anything wrong or mess up somewhere. The last thing I want is to slow anything down or screw anything up worse than it already is.

I see that I misunderstood the error message and it was the file that was too big by itself. I've zipped the Hitman log and attached it below. I hope that is fine.

    Again, thank you.

    [purity]
    [EmptyTemp]
    [start explorer]
    [Reboot]
    • Return to OTM, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar
      ) and choose Paste.
    • Now click the large http://forums.majorgeeks.com/chaslang/images/MoveIt!.png button.
    • If OTM asks to reboot your computer, allow it to do so. The report should appear in Notepad after the reboot.
    • Close OTM.
Now navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder ( assuming your Windows drive is C). This is where your log will be
saved in the form of Date and Time mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log. Just look for the most recent .log file. Attach
this log file to your next message.

Now please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
    • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
    • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista or Seven, right-mouse click it and select Run as Administrator.
    • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
    • Note: That JRT may reset your home page to a google default so you will need to restore your home page setting if this happens.
    • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
    • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
    • Attach JRT.txt to your next message.
Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, Win7 or Win8, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles log
    • the JRT.TXT log
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

My brother says that since I ran the first steps, there's been less ads. They still pop up though.

I could not find the two programs you listed below to uninstall them.

Ran OTM as you described, log attached.

Ran JRT. His antivirus is Microsoft Security Essentials, I shut off RTP before running this as per the steps. JRT said it found a bad module and wanted me to restart. I did, and when it booted up again, the command prompt popped up blank. I redid the JRT scan and got the same result. Pic attached of what it looked like after reboot. I left it alone for about 10-15 minutes to see if it just needed time to finish, but it stayed like that. It also didn't generate a log file either time, so I didn't attach anything.

Moved on to MGTools GetLogs.bat file, attached log below.

I did notice less ads popping up while doing all this tonight, but they definitely still exist. The fact that JRT didn't run properly (as far as I know) means there's likely still some work to be done.

    Thanks!

I ran both of the above. He has Chrome, but never uses it. His main browser is IE, but I'm trying to get him to use Firefox instead.

Pop ups stopped popping up in Firefox after I ran the reset. After I did so, I went ahead and reinstalled Adblock Plus on Firefox and told him to use that from now on.

My brother hasn't complained about any browser-related issues in the time it took me to finally get around to this, but he can't open some of his Steam games and thinks there might still be an issue. If there's any other scans or anything you want me to run to verify this, I'd be happy to do so.

    Thanks!

    You're welcome.
Most likely not due to any remaining malware but let's run one more fix and also another scan. You may have to post in the Software Forum for help with gaming issues. Maybe a reinstall is required.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

Now delete the below folder if it still exists:
    C:\Program Files\Mobogenie

    Please download OTL by OldTimer.
    • Save it to your desktop.
    • Double-click on the OTL icon on your desktopto run it. (Note: if using Vista, Win7 or Win8 use right-click and select Run as Administrator)
    • Check the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
    • Check the "Standard Output".
    • Change the setting of "Drivers" and "Services" to "All"
    • Copy the text in the code box below and paste it into the http://img14.imageshack.us/img14/66/otlcustomfix.png text-field.
      Code:
      activex
      netsvcs
      drives

    • Now click the http://img171.imageshack.us/img171/2405/runscanotl.png button.
    • One report will be created:
      • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Attach OTL.txt to your next message. (How to attach)

Registry merge was successful. There was no Mobogenie folder to delete.

Ran the scan without issue and as directed, log is attached.

    Thanks!

This log is clean. I suggest that you make sure that your protection software is not blocking any processes required by your games. Possibly a reinstall of the game is required. You can discuss this further in the Software Forum.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware.
    2. Renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it in step 4 of the READ & RUN ME.
    3. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis. If you don't see it or it will not uninstall, don't worry about it. Just move on to the next step.
    4. If running Vista, Win 7 or Win 8, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Now goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click ( if running Vista, Win7, or Win 8 Right Click and Run As Administrator ) on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    6. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others) and running MGclean.bat did not remove them, you can delete these files now.
    7. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    8. If you are running Win 8, Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below to flush restore points:
      • Refer to the instructions for your WIndows version in this link:

        Disable And Enable System Restore
      • What we want you to do is to first disable System Restore to flush restore points some of which could be infected.
      • Then we want you to Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
