Hi! I am using letter stickers to better distinguish among same-looking flash drives and have done so before. Both times, the letters on the stickers eroded quickly. :( Is there another way to distinguish between them?

I don't like putting stickers on electronics because it can, in effect, work as a blanket to trap heat. Also, if the stickers wear off, it can leave sticky, gooey residue behind that I sure would not want to get on electrical contacts.

Have you tried a simple permanent marker - perhaps one with a fine tip? Sharpie makes several - even in different colors. Yes, the markings will eventually wear off if the drive is handled often. So you just mark it again.

Use paper tags with string tags. Most sticks have a place to attach a string. I write the capacity of the stick on the tag in ink then I write in pencil how much is used.

Oh. Thanks! :) I really don't need to record the capacity, as most of the drives have written on them the capacity, but do need a reminder of the contents. The flash drive I use for some of my programming works is easily distinguishable, as it's red and has a swivel that twists closed, but right now, I have three that look exactly the same and three more of the same that are not used. I just need a way to distinguish among them without trying each one until I find the one I want.

The written capacity is NOT the true capacity. The true capacity is always smaller than what is showing on the stick. (It has to do with 1,024 rather than 1,000 and the binary number system).

I know. It also has to do with the space used by the file system: the FAT tables and main directory take some room. I really don't need a reminder of the capacity, as the flash drives I'm using are <3/4 full, and I can remember the capacity by the contents reminder. All I need is a letter and something on which to write it.

I bought some markers earlier today. I should've bought thicker ones. :( I marked them and got thin and hard-to-read letters but was able to manage. I just looked at them again, and the marks already eroded. :( Any other suggestions?

Sharpie or paint markers - paint pens

Last night, I peeled the sticker off of one of my flash drives and plan to draw directly on the drive. I'll let you know the verdict. :)

I just drew on the drive. It seems better so far....

The letter is faded but still visible. :)

The letter is virtually gone. Right now, the only way to determine that flash drive is that I peeled off its sticker. :(

Yesterday I bought some highlighters. I found almost Sharpies. The package said they were smudge-proof. At first I thought I was getting markers. :( I marked one of my flash drives, but it eroded also. :( I should try the tags today but really just want one letter. :)

plodr: I tried almost your suggestion and used key rings to identify the flash drives. I needed a little help with the window but got them to work. :) Thank you.

You could also use clear nail polish ( or any clear lacquer) to protect the marker.
