A little story that im sure most everyone here would be familiar with as a "What not to do" type thing.

I work in IT at a college where some of the instructors here aren't exactly computer savvy. One of the instructors learned the hard way why not to use flash drives as a type of permanent storage yesterday, when her flash drive failed that had all of her classroom presentations for the whole semester. She being not-so-savvy of a user did not have backups of her flash drive on her computer. She now has to redo all of her classroom presentations. She was devastated and went home early that afternoon.

Like I say, im sure most people here already know this, but don't use flash drives as permanent storage! One little static shock can wipe those things clean!

I guess the old addage of backup backup backup comes into play as well as backup to different devices, not same flashdrive or HDD with partition (needs to be seperate devices)

Funny enough I was talking a collegue through backups this afternoon and he has now got a external HDD to backup inportant files too as well as his main HDD and secondary HDD, three is better than one! Unless he walks past one of works MRI suites with all three ;)
