I went through the "read and run me first".

Have one computer with XP Pro on the network infected (don't think others are infected). I have uninstalled Ad-aware and JAVA.

    Problems encountered while following instructions:

    1. CCleaner opens but closes almost instantaneously and couldn't run it (closes quicker than I can accurately click on run).

    2. Couln't run spybot. It doesn't start.

    3. Malwarebytes scanned over 38000 files, and over 16000 infected files, the bulk of which is in c:\windows\system32\drivers\down\, but I can't see that folder in windows explorer, even with show hidden files and folders. Had a Runtime Error "6" overflow when quarantining so couldn't complete the task. Perhaps too many to quarantine, tried to quarantine in chunks, but very difficult to uncheck the infections one by one - how many do I have to uncheck? I guess because of the overflow, no log was generated.

    4. Can't run Combo-Fix with the modified name. Not a Valid Win 32 App. Believe Majorgeeks directed the download from the bleepingcomputer website.

So attaching the logs that were generated.

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following:

Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.
    * Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * Do not change any check box options!!
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:

    * Now click the Execute button.
    * Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    * Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    * Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

    Now download and install:
    Java Runtime 6

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Avenger.

Only able to do the first part - running fixME.reg.

I tested Avenger and it is fine, however it won't run when I double-clicked it after extraction onto Desktop. I get a "avenger.exe is not a valid Win32 application" error.

    Same error after reboot.

    Await further instructions.

Please reboot into safe boot mode and run SUPERAntispyware and save a new log. If you have internet access in safe boot mode, immediately attach this log.

Then reboot back into Normal Boot mode and run SUPERAntispyware again and save and attach this second new log.

Update. I went to the Avenger site and was able to run the version created in May. So finished the steps and here are the attachments.

You are still infected. Please complete my previous instructions of running SUPERAntispyware twice and attaching those two logs.

Do you have a bootable copy of your Windows XP CD?

I think we have a copy of the XP bootable CD, I'll have to look.

Could not run Superantispyware. Couldn't boot into safe mode.
    BSOD - STOP: 0X0000007B (0XF78C6524, 0XC0000034, 0X00000000, 0X00000000)

In normal mode, Superantispyware stuck on:
    C:\oc & setting\dmin.ABACUS\App Data\GTek\GTUpdate\Channels\ch.u4\HTML\RunGdp.exe

Ran scan of Malwarebyte and stuck in the same directory.

So including last 2 malwarebyte logs and the MGTools log.

    Still can't run combofix.

Guess it moved to GTek folder.

You need to find it as it may be the only way to fix this problem since not antispyware tools seem to be able to get all of the components removed at once while Windows is running.

This is most likely due to the infection removing the ability to boot into safe mode to make it harder for you to remove the malware.

What software from Gteko do you have installed.

My bad, I didn't give Superantispyware enough time to run. Able to generate logs for Superantispyware and Malwarebytes. Still can't run Combofix nor boot into safe mode by hitting F8 (afraid to use msconfig to change boot into safe mode - what if it doesn't). Attaching logs.

Right now computer seem to be fine.

    Did find XP CD.

Would it help if I try to restore to a earlier check point, about 2 months ago?

Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Do not change any check box options!!
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:
    • Now click the Execute button.
    • Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    • Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    • Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

Also delete all files and subfolders in the below folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp
    C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator.ABACUS\Local Settings\Temp

    Now run Ccleaner!

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\avenger.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    I did as instructed.

Seems like it's fine. But testing Combo-Fix still doesn't work, and suspect booting into safe mode will still be a problem.

Your logs are clean now. I would not worry about ComboFix since we don't need it anymore. If you cannot boot in safe mode, try the below registry patch.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixSBM.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

    Did that help?

  14. subgeeky

    subgeeky Private E-2

I just went ahead and ran the fixSBM.reg. Now it boots into safe mode.

    Thanks for all the help!

    You're welcome.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. You can uninstall SUPERAntiSpyware now.
    2. We recommed you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware as a scanner. It uses no resources except a little disk space until you run a scan.
    3. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop & renamed it like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combo-fix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combo-fix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
      • Delete the C:\combo-fix folder from combofix.
    4. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    5. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    6. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    7. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    8. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    9. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    10. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    11. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
