when I insert a floppy into my computer it does not recognise it .
I have tried updating my driver to be told that I have the latest and the device manager troubleshooter says the floppy drive is working OK.
    Any help gratefully appreciated:

    Hi

As you mention in title floppy drive errors, what error messages are you recieving when trying to access an inserted floppy?

Also try this http://support.microsoft.com/kb/140060 with spare floppy disk that has no or data that can be erased.

Is the cables connecting the floppy drive to motherboard in correctly?

If you enter your BIOS is a floppy enabled and listed/recognised as a drive?

    Hi Halo,
    thanks for your reply

The error message is "the disk in drive A is not formatted, do you wish to format it now. When I say yes it says there is no disk in drive A.

The floppy drive worked ok yesterday.

How do I enter my BIOS

    Regards,
    campbell

I assume that you have tried several floppies to rule out a bad floppy disk.
Does the light come on, on the floppy drive? (This is to rule out a bad power connection).
It can be a bit of a pain but another thing is to try the floppy drive in another computer to see if the floppy drive actually works. Yes floppy drives die. I currently have one in a computer (it is hard to get to so I haven't pulled it out) that I'm about 99% sure the controller no longer works. There is a way to test it in DOS but at the moment, the way to test it escapes me.

    Thanks for yopur reply
I have tried various floppies which all work in another computer.
the light comes on in the drive
Probably better buying a portable floppy drive as trying to replace the built in drive.

"... the various floppies which I tried are all formatted and work on another computer"

Then it's probably that the floppy drive heads are "sloppy" due to age/wear on the actuator mechanism.
