I have I-tunes (along with all the rest of the audio programs for my PC). What I would like to do is braodcast an FM frequency from my PC so that I can listen to my collection without having to run wires or cd's.

I was told from a friend (who doesn't have a clue how to do it of course) that I can broadcast a signal using my Wireless Broadband Router or a Wireless Broadband card)

    PC stats-
    AMD Athlon 3800
    2Gig Ram
    Linksys Wireless S (2gig) 804B
    Plus the usual suspects-
    GForce 7600GT Overclocked
    120 Gig Harddrive

If I'm barking up a stupid tree let me know (I may just need to go fork out 60 bucks and buy a good old fashion FM transmitter....but if I can get away with using a software to make use of what I've got.....all the better).

I've built my own transmitters, both from scratch and from kit form. It's not hard, but you can also get remote speakers from places like Best Buy or Radio Shack, they don't use the FM band and should work a bit better. With an FM xmtr you'll be fighting the local stations, and possibly agrivate the neighbors, but as long as you stay within 10mw and under 10 ft on the antenna you're legal.

If you do decide to go this route (FM xmtr) let me know and I can give you some pointers on maximizing your range.

Yeah, I think I'll stick the the FM idea....primarily since I want availibily in every room plus garage (It's a 2 story house, with aprroximately 50Feet by 30 Feet internaly...a couple walls in there too of course). So it's not a HUGE space, but big enough that I'm guessing FM will work. Anything you know to help clean up the signal would be great.

Your wireless router will not broadcast in the FM band.

I may have misunderstood, but I interpreted his post to say he would remodulate a signal from his computer (which is receiving a streaming audio from the internet) over a FM tranmitter to any FM radio in range.

Correct? Not exactly a networking issue if I'm right.

I've done this, only off my Commodore 64. Still have the transmitter, and was able to maximize the signals using a little antenna theory. Once you know the FM radio frequency it is possible to tweak the antenna to maximize broadcast power.

Yeah, not trying to network. Trying to play my MP3's to all rooms without actaull 2 way communication. Just broadcast it.

I don't have the formula in front of me, but you can tune an antenna to maximize the range. Basically it is length = (c (Speed of light)/2)* 0.95 , this will be the length of 2 pieces of wire. One wire goes up, one wire goes down, don't bend them, off the antenna. This creates a tuned dipole omnidirectional antenna. Just be aware you will be live and your neighbors will get your feed too. In a major city like Dallas it is quite hard finding an empty spot.

Basic HAM radio tech at work. If you would like plans for a kit, or would like to buy one, let me know.
